In a historic event, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the world’s highest railway arch bridge over the Chenab River by unfurling the national flag. He was accompanied by Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, and Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw at the ceremony.
A Marvel of Engineering in the Himalayas
The Chenab Railway Bridge, situated at an astounding height of 359 meters above the Chenab River, stands as a testament to India’s engineering prowess. The bridge, built amidst the rugged and challenging terrain of the Himalayas, is nearly five times taller than Delhi’s Qutub Minar and even surpasses the height of the Eiffel Tower in Paris. It is now officially the tallest arch railway bridge in the world.
Strengthening Connectivity and Development
With the completion of this bridge, the Kashmir Valley is now fully connected to India’s main railway network. This milestone is expected to significantly reduce travel time for passengers and bring about a transformative change in the development of Jammu and Kashmir.
Indigenous Materials, Global Expertise
While the design verification involved foreign expertise, all materials used in the construction of the bridge are entirely indigenous. The project saw the collaboration of nearly 2,000 workers and over 300 engineers, reflecting a remarkable feat of teamwork and dedication.
Operation Sindoor and a Message to Pakistan
During his speech, PM Modi also referenced “Operation Sindoor,” highlighting the successful operation against terrorists from Pakistan exactly one month earlier. He emphasized that Pakistan would remember its humiliating defeat whenever the name of Operation Sindoor is mentioned.
Praise from Local Leadership
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah addressed the people of Kashmir, praising Prime Minister Modi’s leadership and vision. He noted that many, including the British, had dreamed of such a railway connection, but it was finally realized under the current government. Abdullah also expressed hope that the bridge would boost tourism in the region and described it as a historic gift for the entire country.
*Green Signal for Vande Bharat Train
Prime Minister Modi also flagged off the Vande Bharat train service between Katra and Srinagar, marking the first train service between the Kashmir Valley and Jammu. He highlighted the dream of connecting Kashmir to Kanyakumari, and how the Chenab Bridge has now made this dream a reality by bridging the last connectivity gaps.
Inauguration of India’s First Cable-Stayed Rail Bridge
In addition to the Chenab Bridge, PM Modi also inaugurated India’s first cable-stayed rail bridge, the Anji Bridge, further enhancing the region’s infrastructure.
This series of inaugurations marks a new era of connectivity and development for Jammu and Kashmir, promising economic growth, increased tourism, and a stronger bond with the rest of India.
