Etawah Kathavachak Controversy: Leaked Video Reveals the Heated Exchange That Sparked the Caste Uproar
A new video has surfaced from Etawah that sheds light on the origins of the now-infamous Kathavachak (religious storyteller) controversy, sparking fresh debate and outrage across the region.

The video, which has gone viral on social media, shows Mukut Mani Maharaj—the kathavachak at the center of the storm—surrounded by village elders and youth, who are seen questioning him aggressively about his caste identity. The confrontation, laced with accusations and heated arguments, is believed to be the moment that ignited the ongoing dispute.
In the footage, villagers can be heard challenging Maharaj about his background, demanding proof of his caste and accusing him of hiding his true identity. Some voices allege that he is not a Brahmin, but a member of the Yadav community or even a caste considered lower than Yadav. One elderly villager is seen pointing fingers and warning Maharaj for allegedly misleading people by becoming a religious figure under false pretenses.
Despite the barrage of questions, Mukut Mani Maharaj repeatedly insists, “I have no caste. I have been narrating stories for 14-15 years.” He further clarifies that he never uses the surname Agnihotri, only “Mukut Mani Maharaj.”
The video also captures the chaos and noise as villagers argue whether a Yadav kathavachak can allow Brahmins to touch his feet—a gesture traditionally reserved for high-caste priests. The debate intensifies as some accuse Yadavs of betraying their own community by aspiring to roles traditionally held by Brahmins.
As the confrontation escalates, another villager is heard saying, “You’re pretending to be a saint by lying about your identity.” Others demand to see his Aadhaar card as proof.
The scandal has divided opinions, with some blaming the villagers for targeting the kathavachak and others questioning whether Mukut Mani Maharaj misrepresented himself. The controversy has also reignited broader discussions about caste discrimination and social hierarchy in rural India.
The video ends with a reminder of Kabir’s famous couplet: “Don’t ask someone’s caste,” urging viewers to reflect on the true essence of spirituality beyond social divisions.
As the debate rages on, it’s up to the community to decide: Who is really at fault—the villagers who interrogated the kathavachak, or the storyteller himself? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
