Celebrities Pay Heartfelt Tribute at Sulakshana Pandit’s Prayer Meet
The Indian film and music fraternity came together in Mumbai to pay their last respects to veteran singer and actress Sulakshana Pandit, who passed away on November 6, 2025 — coincidentally the same date that marked the death anniversary of actor Sanjeev Kumar, her lifelong love and emotional anchor. The prayer meet was attended by several celebrities and close friends including Anupam Kher, Mukesh Rishi, Jeetendra, and many members of the Pandit family. The atmosphere was filled with grief, nostalgia, and reverence for a woman who had once been one of Hindi cinema’s brightest stars.
A Star Who Sang and Acted Her Way Into People’s Hearts
Sulakshana Pandit belonged to one of India’s most respected musical families. The Pandits have long been synonymous with classical and film music excellence, with her brothers Jatin and Lalit Pandit becoming successful music directors in their own right. But Sulakshana was more than just a member of a famous lineage — she was a talent who carved her own identity as both a singer and actress.

Her voice first captivated listeners when she sang “Saat Samundar Paar Se, Gudiyon Ke Bazaar Se” for the film Takdeer. Soon after, she achieved massive popularity with the romantic hit “Bekarar Dil Tu Gaaye Ja”, a duet with the legendary Kishore Kumar. Throughout the 1970s and early 1980s, she lent her voice to some of the most memorable songs in Hindi cinema and acted opposite nearly every top hero of the time — Rajesh Khanna, Vinod Khanna, Amitabh Bachchan, Shatrughan Sinha, and Rishi Kapoor among them.
Despite her stardom, those who knew her best remember her as a simple, homely, and humble woman — qualities that made her stand apart from the glittering yet often harsh world of show business.
A Life Marked by Love and Loss
Among the most emotional moments of the prayer meet came when an old family friend spoke about her unfulfilled love for actor Sanjeev Kumar, affectionately known as “Hari Bhai.” According to those close to her, Sulakshana had deeply loved Sanjeev Kumar and wished to marry him. Sanjeev too reciprocated her feelings but reportedly refrained from marriage because of a serious heart condition that had claimed the lives of the men in his family before the age of 46.
When Sanjeev Kumar passed away on November 6, 1985, Sulakshana’s world collapsed. “She became like a jogan — a woman who renounced worldly life,” the speaker recalled. “After his death, she withdrew completely from the limelight. It was as though she was breathing, but her life had ended.”
For forty long years, Sulakshana lived a life of seclusion, away from the glamour that had once surrounded her. In a strange twist of fate, she breathed her last exactly forty years to the day after Sanjeev Kumar’s death — on November 6, 2025 — almost as if their souls had been destined to reunite.
Tragedies Within the Family
The Pandit family has faced numerous personal tragedies over the decades. As one attendee recounted, “There were untimely deaths in the family, and one of Sulakshana’s sisters even lost her son to a murder committed by another relative. It was a family shadowed by grief.”
Despite these hardships, Sulakshana had been the breadwinner of her household during her peak years in cinema. As the eldest sister, she carried the responsibility of supporting her younger siblings — including future composers Jatin–Lalit — and ensured that the family remained united. Those close to her remember her as resilient, self-sacrificing, and devoted to her family.
An Evening of Respect and Remembrance
At the prayer meet held in Mumbai, the room resonated with soft music and the murmur of prayers. Photographers and journalists gathered outside, but the atmosphere inside remained solemn and respectful. Anupam Kher, known for his sensitivity and long association with the film fraternity, quietly offered condolences to the family. Mukesh Rishi, another veteran actor, paid his respects, while Jeetendra, one of the few remaining contemporaries of Sulakshana’s golden era, looked visibly emotional as he met her relatives.
When invited to speak, one of the family’s close associates shared, “She was a great actress, a gifted singer, and above all, a deeply kind and simple soul. Even though she worked with every major hero of her time, success never went to her head. She remained grounded, always prioritizing her family and relationships.”
Heartfelt Words from Family Members
One of the most moving tributes came from Vijeta Pandit, Sulakshana’s sister and also an actress, who said tearfully,
“She was not just my sister; she was like a mother to me. She loved my sons as if they were her own children. Even in her final days, she instructed us about her rituals and said my son, Avitesh, would light her pyre. She always said she wanted to go and meet our parents, and now she finally has.”
Vijeta’s words left many in tears. Her son, Avitesh Shrivastava, who is also a musician, spoke softly about his beloved aunt:
“Sulakshana Mausi was always a mother figure, a teacher, and someone who truly listened. The home feels empty without her. She was part of our daily life, our emotional world. After my father’s passing, she was the glue that held us together. It feels like we’ve lost a part of our family, not just a person.”
He also mentioned that he had been closely involved in her care during her later years — managing her medical appointments and helping his mother and aunt stay connected as Sulakshana’s health declined.
“She used to say my son will become a hero one day, just like Kishore Kumar — singing, writing, acting,” Vijeta recalled with a faint smile through her tears. “I couldn’t fulfill that promise for her, but wherever she is, I know she’s watching us and blessing us.”
A Legacy Etched in Melody
Sulakshana Pandit’s contribution to Indian music and cinema cannot be overstated. Her singing career featured collaborations with some of the most iconic composers — Laxmikant-Pyarelal, R.D. Burman, Kalyanji-Anandji, and Bappi Lahiri. Her melodious, emotionally rich voice added depth to countless songs that continue to evoke nostalgia among lovers of classic Hindi film music.
Her acting too was notable for its sincerity and naturalness. In films like Uljhan (1975), Apnapan (1977), and Chehre Pe Chehra (1981), she portrayed a wide range of emotions with poise and authenticity. She balanced glamour with grace — a quality that endeared her to filmmakers and audiences alike.
Anupam Kher’s Reflections
Actor Anupam Kher, speaking to the media outside the venue, said,
“Attending a prayer meeting is not only about paying respects to the departed but also to support their family and friends. I met Sulakshana ji many years ago, and of course, I have seen her films and heard her songs. She was a fine artist and a gentle human being. I came here today to extend love and condolences to Lalit ji, Vijeta ji, and the entire family.”
His words captured the sentiment of many in the industry — a sense of collective loss for an artist who had quietly faded from public memory but remained deeply cherished in private hearts.
Remembering the Woman Behind the Star
Those who knew Sulakshana Pandit personally often speak of her innocence and emotional vulnerability. Fame did not change her essence; she remained someone who valued relationships over recognition. Her simplicity was legendary — she cooked her own meals, avoided the trappings of stardom, and preferred spending time with her family and close friends.
“She lived a life of love and devotion,” a family member said. “But after Sanjeev Kumar’s death, a part of her never healed. She carried that pain quietly all her life.”
A Poetic Ending
As the evening drew to a close, a relative recited a poignant couplet that summed up the essence of Sulakshana Pandit’s life:
“Kabhi kisi ko mukammal jahaan nahin milta,
Kahin zameen toh kahin aasman nahin milta.”
(No one ever gets a perfect world — somewhere the earth is missing, somewhere the sky.)
Those lines echoed through the hall, reminding everyone that even in a life of success and beauty, there can exist an unfulfilled longing. For Sulakshana, that longing was love — a love she never fully possessed but cherished till her last breath.
Rest in Eternal Peace
Sulakshana Pandit will be remembered not just as a beautiful actress or a gifted singer, but as a woman who gave her all — to her art, her family, and her love. Her journey from stardom to solitude tells a story of strength and sacrifice, of music and melancholy, of fame and faith.
As the mourners left the prayer hall, a soft melody of her songs played in the background — a fitting farewell to a woman whose voice had once defined romance for an entire generation.
In the words of one mourner, “She may have left us, but her songs will keep her alive forever.”
