In June 2023, Tanu got married, but what happened after that has left everyone in shock. Two years after her marriage, Tanu was murdered and buried right outside her own house in a densely populated area of Delhi, surrounded by closely built homes. Yet, none of the neighbors knew anything about her or the crime.

When reporters spoke to the neighbors, most admitted they had never met Tanu, despite living next door for years. Vidya Jha, a neighbor, said, “We interacted with her family, but never with the daughter-in-law. In two years, I never saw her.” Another neighbor, Shubham, also confirmed he never met Tanu. Most neighbors said they had never seen her go out for shopping, walks, or even step outside the house.

It is customary in Indian families for neighbors to meet the bride after the wedding, but in Tanu’s case, no such interactions happened. The neighbors only learned about the marriage through hearsay. The family kept to themselves, and there was little to no interaction with the community.

One of the most shocking aspects is how Tanu’s body was buried right in front of the house, yet no one suspected foul play. Several neighbors recalled seeing a deep pit being dug outside the house in April, but assumed it was for a water tank or drainage system, as such work is common in the area. The family had even cordoned off the area, preventing anyone from getting close.

A few days after the pit was dug, Tanu’s in-laws started telling people that she had run away. The husband’s whereabouts and involvement remain unclear. The neighbors also mentioned that the family rarely spoke to anyone, and even Tanu’s sister-in-law, who lived on the first floor, did not interact with others.

The neighborhood is a tightly packed area, with houses close together and narrow streets. Despite this, Tanu managed to remain invisible to the community for two years. Even after her murder and burial, the neighbors did not suspect anything, believing the pit was for routine maintenance.

After the crime, the family filled the pit and continued with their lives. Only later did the truth come out, shocking the entire locality. The case raises numerous questions about social isolation, lack of community interaction, and how such a heinous crime could go unnoticed in a crowded neighborhood.
