Honeymoon Turns Tragic: Newlywed Husband M*rdered in Meghalaya, Wife Accused as Mastermind

What began as a dream honeymoon for a newlywed couple from Indore, Madhya Pradesh, ended in a chilling murder that has shocked the nation. Sonam Raghuvanshi, who married Raja Raghuvanshi on May 11, is now at the center of a sensational murder investigation after her husband’s body was found in a gorge in Meghalaya.

The Timeline of a Shocking Crime

Just nine days after their wedding, Sonam planned a honeymoon trip to Meghalaya. The couple arrived in the scenic state on May 20 and rented a scooter to explore the area. On May 22, they visited the picturesque Mawlyngkhat village and set out to see the famous Living Root Bridge, a marvel crafted by the local Khasi community using the roots of ancient trees. After trekking nearly 3,000 steps and visiting the bridge, they stayed overnight at a local homestay.

The next day, May 23, the couple left the homestay early in the morning—and were never seen together again. On June 2, Raja Raghuvanshi’s body was discovered in a deep gorge. Identification was possible only through a tattoo on his hand.

Sonam, meanwhile, vanished. She resurfaced 16 days later on June 8, found outside a roadside eatery in Ghazipur, a town between Meghalaya and Indore.

Murder, Conspiracy, and a Web of Deceit

The case took a dark turn as police investigations progressed. According to reports, Sonam had allegedly hired four contract killers to murder her husband. The crime was plotted far from their home, in an area notorious for criminal activity near the Bangladesh border—a region where several cases of missing women have previously been reported.

Sonam’s husband Raja, a transport businessman, was reportedly unaware of the plot. The couple was accompanied by a guide and, unbeknownst to Raja, the four contract killers, who posed as tourists and conversed in Hindi. After visiting the Living Root Bridge, the couple returned to their homestay.

On May 23, Raja disappeared. Sonam later claimed that they were attacked by robbers while descending the steps from the bridge, that Raja fought back, and that she was abducted and held captive for days before being released in Ghazipur. However, police found several inconsistencies in her account.

The Investigation Unfolds

Authorities soon arrested Raj Kushwaha, an employee at Sonam’s father’s plywood factory, who was reportedly in love with her. Police allege that Sonam and Raj conspired to eliminate Raja and hired contract killers for the job. The killers were not locals—they were apprehended in Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, not Meghalaya. The accused include Raj Kushwaha (arrested in Indore), Vishal Chauhan (Indore), Akash Rajput (near Indore), Anand (from Basahari village), and Akash Lodhi (from Digwar village, Lalitpur).

Police have described Sonam as the mastermind behind the murder, orchestrating the entire plot just 10 days into her marriage. The honeymoon turned into a carefully planned crime, leaving family members and society in shock.

A Reflection on Society

The case has sparked widespread debate and concern. It is seen as yet another example of changing dynamics and rising crime involving women in a traditionally male-dominated society. The incident has left many questioning the sanctity of marriage and the lengths to which individuals may go for personal motives.
