A Daughter’s Gift: How Laxmi of Muradpur Became Her Father’s Pride and Her Village’s Inspiration
Imagine a poor father who puts every penny, every dream, and even his humble mud house on the line for the wedding of his only daughter. For Ramprasad, a simple and hardworking farmer from the small village of Muradpur near Bareilly, nothing mattered more than giving his daughter Laxmi a dignified send-off. While neighbors sometimes scoffed, sometimes showed pity, no one ever truly lent a hand.
Laxmi, Ramprasad’s only treasure since his wife Savitri had passed away years ago, was his world. He dreamed of her future, teaching her to read and encouraging her to work. Laxmi was bright, finishing school and later taking a modest accounting job in a nearby town, every month bringing her father what little she could. “Study well and become something, that’s my biggest earning,” he often said.
When talks for Laxmi’s marriage began, hope entered their home. The groom, Amar, was a kind-hearted schoolteacher. But Amar’s family demanded dowry—a custom Ramprasad had neither the heart nor the means to fulfill. He toiled in the fields, asked around for loans, but ultimately faced only rejection and ridicule. Desperate, he made the heart-wrenching decision to sell his cherished home, believing his daughter’s happiness was worth every sacrifice.
News traveled fast in Muradpur, with whispers and judgment following in its wake. Even then, Ramprasad was steadfast. “There must be no shortcoming in Laxmi’s wedding,” he resolved, unmoved by taunts.
Overhearing her father’s struggle, Laxmi’s heart broke. She begged him not to sell their home, but Ramprasad was resolute. Still, Laxmi quietly took charge. She saved every rupee from her salary, worked long hours, and borrowed small amounts from friends, all with one aim: to save the house her father loved.
A week before the wedding, Laxmi met with Seth Harprasad, the rich man set to buy their house. “Don’t buy my father’s home,” she pleaded, “I’ll pay you the same amount you offered him.” Seth was incredulous. “Where will a girl like you find so much money?” But seeing her resolve and the accumulated savings she produced, he relented and handed the deed back to Ramprasad, agreeing to keep her role a secret.
On Laxmi’s wedding day, as the home brimmed with relatives and rituals, her eyes were bright with anticipation but tinged with worry for her father. At the emotional moment of her farewell, she handed Ramprasad a small envelope. To his astonishment, inside was the deed—the proof that their house was still theirs. “I bought it back for you, Babuji,” she whispered. Tears streamed down Ramprasad’s face as he embraced the daughter who had given him a gift no wealth could buy.
After her marriage, word of Laxmi’s sacrifice spread across the village. People once critical of Ramprasad now hailed Laxmi as a heroine. Even ‘Masterji,’ who had once taunted her father, came to congratulate him: “You have raised a daughter more precious than gold.”
But Laxmi’s story didn’t end there. Months later, she returned to Muradpur. With savings from her new job, she founded a small school in her mother’s memory, providing free education for poor children so that no father would ever have to sell his home for a daughter’s wedding again. Ramprasad, his heart full, blessed her: “You have not just saved our home, you have given this entire village a new future.”
Today, Laxmi’s school is thriving. Children from across the village dream new dreams, inspired by the girl who was determined to change her fate—and theirs. Ramprasad’s house, once his alone, has become the pride of the village, a testament to love, sacrifice, and the transformative power of a daughter.
