A Groom Rejects 3.1 Million Rupees Dowry in Uttar Pradesh, Sets Powerful Example Against Dowry System

In a heartwarming story from Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh, a groom set a remarkable example by refusing a dowry of ₹3.1 million (31 lakh rupees) and accepted only a symbolic ₹1 as a wedding gift. This act has won widespread praise and is being hailed as a powerful message against the age-old dowry system.

The incident took place during a wedding in Shabuddinpur village, Budhana Tehsil, where the groom, Avdhesh Singh, was presented with a plate full of cash by the bride’s family as dowry. Instead of accepting the money, Avdhesh joined his hands respectfully, returned the entire amount, and took only ₹1 as a token of goodwill.

The guests at the wedding were stunned by this gesture. For a moment, there was silence in the courtyard, but soon the atmosphere turned celebratory as everyone began applauding Avdhesh and his family for their principled stand. The bride’s family, especially her grandfather Sukhpal, was deeply moved by the moment.

Speaking to the media, Avdhesh repeatedly emphasized that both giving and taking dowry must come to a complete end. He shared that when the bride’s family first visited, his father had insisted that the marriage would be solemnized with just ₹1 as a token. Even when the bride’s family arrived with a plate decorated with cash, Avdhesh and his family declined the money, sticking to their original promise.

Avdhesh explained, “You can’t run a household with someone else’s dowry. Only hard work and employment can sustain a family, not 10, 20, or 30 lakh rupees from someone else. The dowry system must be stopped completely. The biggest gift is the bride herself, nothing can surpass the value of ‘kanyadaan’ (the giving away of the daughter).”

The entire family was in agreement, and their decision has become a beacon of hope for many. The bride, Aditi, expressed her happiness, saying, “My husband and his family honored their commitment. They accepted only ₹1, and nothing else. I am very proud and happy to have such in-laws.”

The news has gone viral in local newspapers and media, with many praising the groom’s family for their integrity and courage. In a society where dowry-related crimes and tragedies are still common, this quiet but powerful act of resistance has inspired many.

As the wedding festivities continued, the atmosphere was filled with joy and admiration. Guests and relatives left with a renewed sense of hope, and the story has become a talking point in the region.

In a world where the dowry system has caused immense pain and injustice, this simple act of refusing dowry stands out as a symbol of change. It sends a clear message to the youth: focus on building a life through hard work and respect, not through someone else’s wealth. The fight against dowry continues, but stories like these remind us that positive change is possible, one wedding at a time.
