At 70, Anupam Kher Reveals Heartache of Not Having a Child of His Own
Veteran actor Anupam Kher, at 70 years old, has opened up for the first time about his longing to have a child of his own—a chapter missing from his otherwise illustrious life. In a recent candid interview with Raj Shamani, Kher spoke emotionally about the pain and emptiness he sometimes feels for not being able to experience fatherhood with his wife, actress Kirron Kher.
Anupam Kher’s journey in marriage began with his first wedding to actress Madhumati Kapoor, which ended within months. He later found lifelong companionship with Kirron Kher, marrying her nearly 40 years ago. Despite decades of togetherness, the couple was unable to have children together.
During the heartfelt conversation, Kher revealed, “Kirron became pregnant once, but she couldn’t conceive successfully. She was unable to become a mother, and I got busy with work. Over time, the absence of our own child started to feel more real—especially after I turned 60.”
Kher confessed that although he has worked extensively with children through his foundation and hosted the kids’ TV show ‘Something To Anupam Uncle,’ it was only in recent years that the void has come into focus. “I love children. I enjoy spending time with them immensely, but the feeling of not seeing your own child grow up has started affecting me with age.”
Addressing why he never had his own biological children, Kher explained, “Kirron couldn’t conceive, and when she did once, there were complications with the baby’s growth. Later, I got busy with my career, and Sikandar was already there. He was four years old when he came into my life, and when we married, Kirron brought him along.”
Kirron Kher was previously married to Mumbai-based businessman Gautam Berry before divorcing him in 1985—the same year she married Anupam Kher. Sikandar, her son from her first marriage, was readily accepted by Anupam, and the two developed a close father-son bond that remains strong today. Despite this, Anupam Kher admits the pain of never becoming a biological father lingers.
This candid admission offers a rare and vulnerable glimpse into the private life of one of Hindi cinema’s most respected personalities, reminding fans that even the brightest stars carry unseen sorrows.
