Bollywood Mourns the Passing of Dharmendra: Salman Khan and the Film Industry in Tears
Mumbai, India – A wave of grief has swept through Bollywood following the passing of legendary actor Dharmendra Singh Deol at Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital. The beloved “He-Man” of Indian cinema, who reigned over the silver screen for more than six and a half decades, breathed his last after a prolonged illness at the age of 89.
Dharmendra’s health had been fragile for several years, with frequent hospitalizations due to age-related issues such as blood pressure and respiratory problems. In 2022, he underwent surgery for his back and knees, which limited his mobility. Despite his health challenges, Dharmendra continued to interact with fans on social media, sharing stories and maintaining his trademark smile.
As news of his death broke, a somber silence fell over Bollywood. Stars and fans alike rushed to the hospital, hoping to catch a final glimpse of their hero. Outside Breach Candy Hospital, crowds gathered, many in tears, holding pictures of Dharmendra. His family members, including sons Sunny and Bobby Deol, wife Hema Malini, and daughters Esha and Ahana Deol, were present, overcome with emotion.
The impact of Dharmendra’s passing was felt deeply not just by his family but across the nation. Bollywood stars, from Amitabh Bachchan to Jeetendra, expressed their sorrow and admiration, noting that Dharmendra’s warmth and humanity were unparalleled. Salman Khan, in particular, was seen crying inconsolably. He has often referred to Dharmendra as a father figure and mentor, and their bond was celebrated throughout the industry.

Salman Khan canceled his shooting schedule and rushed to Dharmendra’s home, embracing Sunny and Bobby Deol and paying his respects. In a heartfelt social media post, Salman shared a photo with Dharmendra and wrote, “Love you, Paaji. You will always remain in my heart.” Fans responded with an outpouring of grief, recalling the special relationship between the two stars.
Dharmendra’s journey began in a small village in Punjab, where he was born on December 8, 1935. His passion for films started early, and after winning an acting competition in college, he made his debut in the 1960 film “Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere.” Success followed quickly, with iconic roles in films like “Phool Aur Patthar,” “Milan Ki Bela,” “Sholay,” and “Dharmveer.” His portrayal of Veeru in “Sholay” remains etched in the memories of generations.
His personal life was as dramatic as his films. Dharmendra married Prakash Kaur, with whom he had two sons, Sunny and Bobby. Later, he married Hema Malini, his co-star in many hit films, after converting to Islam to circumvent legal restrictions on second marriages. He balanced both families with love and respect, and his children have always spoken highly of his kindness and generosity.
Dharmendra’s legacy includes over 300 films, spanning action, romance, and comedy. He was known for his fitness, simplicity, and infectious charm. In 2012, he was honored with the Padma Bhushan, one of India’s highest civilian awards. His last film appearance was in “Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani,” where his presence once again won the hearts of audiences.
As Dharmendra’s body was brought home for his final rites, fans lined the streets with mobile lights and flowers, bidding farewell to their hero. The Mumbai police ensured security as crowds gathered for his last journey. Tributes poured in from across the country, with stars and fans alike sharing his famous dialogues and celebrating his legacy.
Sunny Deol remembered his father as a man who taught him that being a good person is more important than being a star. Bobby Deol credited his father for instilling simplicity and values. Hema Malini described Dharmendra as not just her husband, but her best friend and the most beautiful part of her life.
Bollywood stands united in mourning the loss of Dharmendra, a true legend whose films, style, and humanity have become the soul of Hindi cinema. As fans and stars say their final goodbyes, there is one sentiment that echoes everywhere: Dharmendra, you will always be our hero.
