Chaos Erupts in Bihar Assembly as Politicians Trade Insults and Accusations

Tensions boiled over in the Bihar Assembly on Thursday as members of the ruling and opposition parties exchanged heated words, hurling insults and accusations amid a debate on key public issues.

The session devolved into chaos when an opposition member, visibly outraged, alleged that BJP leaders and ministers had insulted his parents and female relatives with abusive language. “My mother and father were being abused; even my sisters were insulted,” said the MLA, demanding that the Speaker review the video footage to confirm the slurs. “Yesterday the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister resorted to abuse; today their subordinates are following suit,” he added, challenging the Speaker to take action.

Repeated pleas for order went unheeded, with multiple members shouting, “Sit down, sit down, everyone please sit or the floor will get slippery (‘geela ho jayega’)!” Despite calls for calm, both sides continued to talk over each other, and repeated disruptions forced the Speaker to intervene numerous times.

The aggrieved opposition leader rejected accusations that his language had been unparliamentary, pointing the finger back at the BJP: “This is the culture of the BJP. Their own state president boasts of knowing the dictionary of abuses. I have never used a slur against anyone in my ten years in parliamentary or political life. Do not try to tarnish my character.”

He also accused BJP leaders of orchestrating “goondagardi” (hooliganism) in the Assembly, saying, “Those who assassinated Mahatma Gandhi are now showing their true colors here. If you insult someone’s father, how would you feel if we insulted yours? Such behavior is unacceptable and sets a dangerous precedent.”

The ongoing shouting matches, the opposition claimed, were calculated distractions from vital issues. “It’s the role of the opposition to question and the government to respond. When the ruling party itself disrupts the Assembly, what will democracy come to?”

The uproar began when opposition MLAs tried to raise matters of public interest, which were met with ridicule and disruption from treasury benches. “We were presenting evidence-based arguments, point by point. The BJP has no answers, so they resort to chaos and invective,” the MLA asserted.

The Speaker repeatedly implored the members to maintain decorum, but to little avail. As members clad in black (a sign of protest) entered the well of the House, the chaos only intensified, reflecting a legislative environment marked by deep political animosity.

As the session ended on a sour note, people across Bihar witnessed yet another example of contentious, confrontational politics, underscoring the growing chasm between the government and the opposition in addressing public concerns with dignity and mutual respect.
