The Incident

According to eyewitnesses, JP Yadav, who was well-known for his expertise in snake rescue, was called to remove a snake from a residence. However, he was reportedly intoxicated at the time. While attempting to display the rescued cobra to onlookers, Yadav was bitten on the finger. The venom quickly took effect, and he collapsed at the scene before he could be transported to a hospital. He was unable even to secure the snake in a container due to his condition.

A Sobering Reminder for Snake Rescuers

This fatality adds to a worrying trend in India, where over the past three years, 75 snake rescuers have died from snake bites. Experts warn that performing rescues while under the influence of alcohol or drugs significantly increases the risk, as intoxication accelerates blood circulation, causing venom to spread more rapidly. “If you are sober, you may survive long enough to reach a hospital. But alcohol makes the venom act faster, often with fatal results,” said a fellow rescuer.

Calls for Training and Caution

JP Yadav’s mentor and colleagues have repeatedly cautioned against handling snakes without proper training and equipment. “Snake rescue is not for showmanship. It requires expertise, caution, and respect for the animal,” said a senior rescuer. He urged all snake handlers to carry necessary medicines and anti-venom, and to avoid risky behavior, especially when intoxicated.

Support for the Family

In the wake of JP Yadav’s death, appeals have been made for a postmortem to secure government compensation for his family. The Jharkhand government is expected to provide financial aid, and fellow rescuers have pledged additional support. “We will do everything we can to help his wife and children during this difficult time,” said a colleague.

A Message to the Community

Senior snake rescuers have established a WhatsApp group to provide training and emergency guidance to others in the field. “Watching videos is not enough. Proper training and experience are essential. We want to prevent further tragedies like this,” they said, inviting new rescuers to register for support and advice.

JP Yadav’s untimely death serves as a grim reminder of the risks involved in wildlife rescue work and the vital need for professionalism and caution. The community mourns his loss and hopes that his story will inspire greater safety awareness among all who work with snakes.
