The Conspiracy

On your screen are two images: one shows a husband and wife in police custody; the other, a burnt car surrounded by police officers, dated June 30. Together, these images reveal the dark plot that unfolded in Chitrakoot.

According to police investigations, Sunil Singh and his wife Hema Singh took out a ₹2 crore insurance policy through HDFC Bank and Tata AIA. Inspired by stories they saw on YouTube about people faking their deaths to claim insurance money, the couple decided to execute a similar plan. Their goal: to fraudulently claim the ₹2 crore insurance payout.

The Crime

Sunil Singh staged his own death using a burnt car and fabricated evidence. His wife, Hema Singh, supported the false narrative by testifying to his supposed demise. The family even performed Sunil’s last rites, convinced that he had died in a tragic accident.

However, the police grew suspicious during their investigation. DNA samples were collected from the body found in the burnt car and from Sunil’s father. When authorities called the family for further verification, Hema and Sunil went into hiding for several days, raising further suspicion.

The Gruesome Truth

To carry out the plan, Sunil preyed on a vulnerable man addicted to drugs and alcohol. He lured the victim with food and alcohol, then burned him alive in his own car, making it look like Sunil himself had died. With his wife’s help, Sunil spread the story of his own death.

Charges

The couple now faces serious charges: fraud for attempting to claim the insurance money, and murder for killing an innocent man to make their scheme believable.
