Heartwarming Moment: UP Policewoman Helps Italian Tourists Wear Saree at Taj Mahal
The western gate of the Taj Mahal was bustling with tourists, the white marble gleaming brilliantly. Amidst the crowd, two women in blue and pink sarees stood out—Elisa and Bruna, tourists from Italy. The wind was strong, making it difficult for them to keep their sarees in place. Despite several attempts to fix the pleats and drape the saree properly, the task proved challenging. Spectators around them were busy filming videos, but no one stepped forward to help.
That’s when UP Police Constable Laxmi Devi appeared. Without a hint of hesitation or shyness, and with a warm smile, she approached the duo and said, “May I help you?”
What followed became the most memorable moment of Elisa and Bruna’s entire trip to India. Laxmi Devi patiently and thoughtfully helped both women with their sarees—fixing the pleats, securing the pallu gracefully on their shoulders, and then teaching them how to walk and sit so the saree remained comfortable and didn’t get tangled in their feet. The tourists were full of questions, and Elisa inquired, “Why do you wear a saree?” Laxmi smiled and explained that she wears sarees during festivals, at home, and sometimes even on duty, as it’s part of their uniform.
Laxmi further elaborated that the pallu represents dignity and the pleats symbolize discipline, which left both Elisa and Bruna visibly intrigued and respectful. Bruna commented that she now understood why Indian women look so graceful and beautiful in sarees—that it’s not just a fabric, but a tradition and a culture.
While many observed the unfolding scene, it was Laxmi’s act of kindness that truly touched the hearts of the tourists. It didn’t matter if someone recorded the moment—the experience was forever imprinted on Elisa and Bruna’s hearts.
Under the shadow of the Taj Mahal, two foreign tourists and one Indian policewoman connected across languages through shared feelings and mutual respect. For Elisa and Bruna, who had already toured Delhi and were headed next to Jaipur, the love and help they received from Laxmi Devi remained the most cherished memory of their India trip—surpassing even the beauty of the Taj Mahal itself.
Reflecting on the incident, Laxmi Devi said, “I did only what my mother, my sister, or any Indian woman would do. Saree is an integral part of our culture—and they are our guests.” In the end, Elisa simply said, “Thank you, Laxmi.”
