Heavy Rains in North and Central India Trigger Flood Threats in Prayagraj as Ganga and Yamuna Rivers Rise

Incessant rains in Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh have caused river levels to surge, leading to severe flood-like conditions in Prayagraj. Simultaneously, rising water levels in Madhya Pradesh’s Ken and Betwa rivers, along with Rajasthan’s Chambal river, have caused the Yamuna to swell further.

Both the Ganga and Yamuna rivers in the Sangam city of Prayagraj are witnessing rapid rises in their water levels. Urban areas in the city are now facing significant threats of flooding. Both rivers have crossed warning marks and are nearing their danger levels, raising alarm among authorities and residents alike.

Low-lying areas, including roads from the Nag Vasuki Temple to Dashashwamedh Ghat, are submerged. As a result, local transportation and everyday life have been severely disrupted.

“This is the third time that the floods have struck with such intensity, and Hanumanji’s statue at the ghat has been submerged for the third time. There are fears that water levels may rise further, with entire ghats and adjoining roads completely waterlogged,” said a local resident.

Many houses and businesses along the riverbanks have already been inundated. For many affected families, the situation is becoming more desperate each day, with food and essential supplies failing to reach them due to blocked roads and rising waters.

“Everyone is struggling here. Our houses are underwater. It’s hard for children to go to school, for people to reach coaching centres, or even to open shops in the market. Getting food is a challenge, and just stepping outside has become difficult,” shared another resident.

With the threat of further flooding, authorities in Prayagraj remain on high alert and are closely monitoring the situation. Emergency services are preparing for possible evacuations and further rises in water levels.

The public is being urged to avoid affected areas. Residents are also encouraged to subscribe to official channels for the latest updates and safety information.
