Major Himanshu Bhardwaj and Team Build Ganganani Bridge in Record Time Amidst Adversity
In a commendable display of teamwork and dedication, Major Himanshu Bhardwaj and his team have successfully constructed the Ganganani bridge in Uttarkashi under extremely challenging conditions. The project, which required round-the-clock effort, has now made the bridge safe for pedestrian use, with vehicular movement expected to open by the evening.

Speaking exclusively, Major Bhardwaj described the effort required for the completion of the 90-feet triple single Bailey bridge. “It wasn’t just hard work, it was an incredible team effort,” he said. “Each Bailey panel weighs around 250 kg and requires six soldiers to carry. The transom weighs 200 kg. This is a heavy-duty bridge made with very strong materials, demanding significant strength from everyone involved.”
Over the past 24 hours, the team managed only two hours of rest as they raced against time. “We started work at 4 AM, took a brief break, and got back to it by 6:30 AM. Within 24 hours, we had the bridge ready for pedestrian use,” Major Bhardwaj revealed. He emphasized that the bridge is currently still on rollers. Once these rollers are removed and the final jack-down is completed by evening, vehicles will also be allowed to cross.
The project faced multiple challenges, including the rainy season, slippery conditions, and the sheer weight of materials. Despite limited space for construction and the logistical complication of coordinating two different organizations and their labor, the team managed to avoid any injuries—a point Major Bhardwaj counts as their greatest achievement.
He also credited the BRO and the team’s JC-in-charge for their support. “They improvised cleverly with the use of a forklift to manage counterweights and launch the bridge delicately and safely,” he added.
In conclusion, Major Bhardwaj stated, “It’s only thanks to the hard work of our men and the excellent cooperation between teams that we are able to open this bridge for traffic by this evening.”
The successful completion of the Ganganani bridge stands as a testament to the resilience and commitment of the Indian Army and its partner organizations, ensuring vital connectivity for Uttarkashi’s residents and travelers.
