Every day brings a new theory in the Raja Raghuvanshi murder case, and now yet another twist has surfaced. Raja’s mother has revealed that Sonam, Raja’s wife, was always accompanied by a girl—raising questions about the girl’s identity. Was she a sister, a relative, or simply a close friend?
Meanwhile, investigators have recovered a second weapon, described as a “daav”—a tool similar to an axe and knife combined, commonly used in the Northeast. This means two weapons were involved in the crime, indicating a more complex murder plot than initially thought.
Raja’s mother, Uma Raghuvanshi, told police that Sonam had a friend who was constantly by her side—day and night. She said, “I don’t remember her name, but she was always with Sonam. They went shopping together, worked together, and knew everything about each other.” Uma confirmed she had met this friend during a visit to Bhopal, but couldn’t recall her name.
This revelation comes as Shillong Police have recorded statements from Raja’s family. It’s likely that Raja’s mother also mentioned this mysterious friend to the police. The biggest question now: Who is this girl, and did she know about Sonam’s alleged plan?
Family members described the friend as both a close companion and someone who worked under Sonam. After recording statements from Raja’s family, Shillong Police visited Sonam’s family for a lengthy one-and-a-half-hour interrogation. Sonam’s father, mother, and brother Govind were questioned about Sonam’s nature, her relationship with Raja, and her behavior.
Police later searched Sonam’s room, looking for clues about this mysterious friend—perhaps a photograph or a contact number. Did Sonam’s family provide any details about this unidentified girl?
Uma Raghuvanshi claims Sonam had four close friends, but one stood out as especially important. During Sonam’s wedding shopping, she was in constant touch with these friends. Police believe this particular friend could be the key to unlocking the truth behind Raja’s murder.
The investigation now focuses on whether Sonam and her friend planned the murder together, whether the friend helped Sonam hide, or even assisted her escape from Indore to Uttar Pradesh. Police are also probing whether the phone number with which Sonam exchanged 234 calls in one month belonged to this friend.
Records show that this number, registered to “Sanjay Verma” via a mobile app, was switched off at 11:20 PM on June 8—the very night Sonam surfaced in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, and allegedly surrendered. Police suspect the user of this number knew Sonam was about to be caught and switched it off in anticipation.
With this, a new character—possibly named Sanjay—has entered the investigation. Some call him Sonam’s mystery friend, others suspect he may be the mastermind behind Raja’s murder. However, with so many angles, it remains unclear who this person really is. The mystery may only be solved once police recover Sonam’s phones.
Investigators have learned Sonam had three phones, not two as previously thought. After the murder, Sonam gave one of her phones to Akash, an accomplice who destroyed it. At the crime scene, Sonam switched off her phones and broke Raja’s phone herself. She later activated her own SIM in Indore to check WhatsApp messages—a move that helped police trace her.
Police are now conducting search operations in Indore, Guwahati, and various parts of Uttar Pradesh. They hope that, just as they recovered the murder weapon, they will soon find the phones that could reveal the full story behind Raja’s murder and the involvement of Sonam and her associates.
