In a small rented room, Chunni Devi and her daughter Suhani recount the hardships their family has endured over the past few years. Originally from Fatehpur district in Uttar Pradesh, the family moved to Indore in search of better opportunities. Chunni Devi’s husband had settled in Indore for work even before their marriage, running a shop in the city’s Raj Market.

Life took a tragic turn when Chunni Devi’s husband was diagnosed with a brain tumor, forcing him to close his shop. The burden of supporting the family fell on their son, Raj, who left his studies after the 10th grade to work in the cloth market for three years.

Despite the challenges, Raj remained the backbone of the family, contributing to household expenses and ensuring his siblings could continue their education. Chunni Devi herself worked in a printing workshop, making designs for t-shirts to help make ends meet.

The family’s financial struggles were evident. Raj’s monthly salary started at 10,000 rupees and sometimes went up to 15,000, but it was barely enough to cover rent, food, and school fees. Chunni Devi explained how they relied on ration cards and her daily wage diary to manage their household needs. The rent for their small room was 2,500 rupees, with additional charges for electricity.

Raj was known for his kindness and selflessness. Chunni Devi recalled an incident when Raj gave his own slippers to an elderly vegetable vendor who was barefoot in the cold, choosing to walk barefoot himself for several days.

When asked about Raj’s relationship with Sonam, a woman often mentioned in connection with him, Chunni Devi and Suhani were adamant that there was nothing more than a sibling-like bond between them. Sonam would tie a rakhi on Raj’s wrist every year, and Raj always referred to her as “didi” (elder sister). There was never any talk of money being exchanged or any suspicious activity involving Sonam.

Chunni Devi also addressed rumors about financial troubles or loans, clarifying that Raj never signed any papers or took out any loans. He worked long hours, often returning late at night due to extra work at the warehouse, but always maintained his integrity and dedication to his family.

Despite all their hardships, the family remains united and hopeful. Chunni Devi continues to work to support her children’s education, while Suhani, now in 12th grade with a focus on science subjects, aspires to build a better future.

The family’s story is a testament to resilience in the face of adversity, the strength of familial bonds, and the enduring hope for a brighter tomorrow.
