West Bengal’s fiery politician and Member of Parliament from Krishnanagar, Mahua Moitra, is back in the headlines—but this time, it’s not for her political stance. The reason is her personal life. Mahua Moitra has tied the knot with Pinaki Mishra, a senior leader from Odisha and former BJD MP. The wedding took place last month on May 30th in Germany.
Rumors about their growing closeness had been circulating for some time. Last year, the two were spotted together in London, and their photos quickly went viral on social media.
Who is Pinaki Mishra?
Pinaki Mishra is a prominent name in Odisha politics, having served as a Member of Parliament from the Puri constituency three times. A graduate of Delhi University’s prestigious St. Stephen’s College, Pinaki is also a lawyer by profession and has fought several important cases in the Supreme Court of India. Known for both his political and legal careers, he first entered Parliament in 1996 on a Congress ticket but soon switched to the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) as political winds changed.
He won the Puri seat in 2009, 2014, and 2019 consecutively. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, he made headlines by defeating BJP’s prominent spokesperson Sambit Patra. However, in 2024, BJD supremo Naveen Patnaik denied him a ticket, nominating Arup Patnaik instead. With Pinaki stepping back from the political scene, the Puri seat shifted hands, and Sambit Patra won the seat for BJP.
Pinaki Mishra’s personal life has also been eventful. His first marriage was to Sangeeta Mishra on January 16, 1984, and the couple has two children—a son and a daughter. Notably, his son is married to the daughter of Ranjan Bhattacharya, the adopted son-in-law of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, with the wedding being a grand affair in Jaipur. Although Pinaki is less active in politics now, his wealth remains a topic of discussion. In his 2019 election affidavit, he declared assets worth ₹17 crore, including ₹2 crore in movable assets. He owns two Mercedes cars and a Hyundai Creta, and his corporate investments further strengthen his financial status.
About Mahua Moitra
At 50, Mahua Moitra is known for her aggressive political stance and outspoken nature in her personal life. This is her second marriage; she previously married Danish banker Lars Borreson around 2003, but the relationship didn’t last long. She returned to India in 2009, started her political career with the Congress, and later joined the Trinamool Congress in 2011. Last year, her name was also linked with Supreme Court lawyer Jai Anant Dehadrai, but that relationship ended on a bitter note.
According to reports, Mahua Moitra’s net worth is around ₹3 crore. She has over ₹1 crore in her bank accounts, investments of over ₹14 lakh in shares, debentures, and bonds, and owns jewelry worth about ₹1.37 crore.
A New Chapter Together
The marriage of Mahua Moitra and Pinaki Mishra has fueled political discussions, but it is also a story of two leaders from different backgrounds coming together to start a new journey in life. Their union adds a new chapter to the many alliances formed in the world of politics.
