Tragedy in Agra: Six Girls from One Family Drown in Yamuna River
A heart-wrenching incident shook Agra on Tuesday, claiming the lives of six young girls from a single family. No one could have imagined that the girls who were seen playing and laughing in the courtyard just moments before would never return home again.
The tragedy unfolded near Swami Nagla village in the Sikandra police station area, where six girls from the same family entered the Yamuna River to escape the intense summer heat. Unaware of the river’s depth, the girls ventured further into the water. Suddenly, one girl slipped into a deep pit and began to drown. In a desperate attempt to save her, the others also rushed into the deeper water, but all six ultimately lost their lives.
Reports indicate that four of the girls died on the spot, while two others were rescued in critical condition but succumbed to their injuries during treatment. A video recorded before the incident has surfaced, showing the girls making social media reels and enjoying themselves.
Eyewitnesses revealed that as the girls advanced into the river, one of them stepped into a pit and slipped underwater. The others, in an attempt to rescue her, also got caught in the deep water and drowned. Villagers present at the scene quickly alerted the police. The Sikandra police and a team of divers arrived promptly and launched a rescue operation. After considerable effort, all the girls were brought out, but by then, four had already passed away.
The entire village is now engulfed in grief, and the families are devastated. The victims were all minors, aged between 10 and 18. Four of the girls were residents of Swami Nagla, while two were visiting relatives in Agra’s Rami Nagla. All belonged to the same extended family—three were real sisters, one was their cousin (uncle’s daughter), and two others were cousins from their maternal aunt’s side.
District Magistrate Arvind Mallappa Bangari and the local police administration visited the scene, assuring the bereaved families of all possible assistance. The Uttar Pradesh government has announced a compensation of ₹4 lakh for the families of each deceased girl from the relief fund. The bodies have been sent for postmortem examination.
Despite the government’s compensation, it is unlikely to fill the void left by this immense loss. The incident serves as a grim reminder of the dangers hidden beneath seemingly calm waters, especially for children unaware of the risks.
