According to police investigations, Sunil Singh had taken out a ₹2 crore insurance policy through Tata AIA via HDFC Bank. Inspired by stories they had seen on YouTube about people faking their deaths for insurance money, the couple devised a plan to stage Sunil’s death. On June 30, police found a burnt-out car with a charred body inside, and Sunil’s wife identified the remains as her husband’s. The family even conducted Sunil Singh’s last rites.

However, suspicions arose during the investigation, especially after DNA samples were collected from the body and Sunil’s father. As police dug deeper, inconsistencies emerged, and both Sunil and Hema went into hiding for several days.

The investigation revealed the horrifying truth: Sunil had selected a vulnerable man struggling with addiction as his victim. He lured the man with food and alcohol, then set him on fire inside his own car to make it appear as though he himself had died. With his wife’s support, the false story of his death was spread to claim the insurance money.

The elaborate scheme unraveled when police uncovered evidence of the fraud. Both Sunil and Hema Singh have now been arrested. They face charges of fraud and the murder of an innocent man, committed in their attempt to collect the insurance payout.

The case has shocked the region and highlighted the dark extremes some are willing to go for financial gain.
