Doctor Death Arrested: The Chilling Saga of Devendra Sharma, India’s Most Notorious Killer Doctor
In a case that reads like a crime thriller, police have finally apprehended one of India’s most feared and elusive serial killers—Dr. Devendra Sharma, infamously known as ‘Doctor Death’. Accused of murdering over 50 truck and taxi drivers, feeding their bodies to crocodiles, and running a massive illegal kidney racket, Sharma’s arrest has sent shockwaves across the nation.

A Sinister Double Life
Devendra Sharma, now 67, hails from Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh. Outwardly, he was a respected Ayurvedic doctor with a degree in BMS (Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery) obtained in 1984. He set up the Janata Clinic in Bandikui, Rajasthan, hoping to build a life of service and respect. But after a decade of struggling financially, Sharma’s life took a dark and deadly turn.
A failed business venture in 1984, where he lost ₹11 lakh in a gas agency scam, pushed him toward the criminal underworld. The man who once healed people’s ailments would become a harbinger of death for many.
A Trail of Blood and Betrayal
Between 1998 and 2004, Sharma, along with accomplice Dr. Amit, masterminded one of India’s largest illegal kidney rackets. Their network spanned several states, and together, they orchestrated more than 125 illicit kidney transplants, earning between ₹5 to ₹7 lakh for each operation. The victims—often poor and desperate—were lured, deceived, and robbed of their organs.
But organ trafficking was only one facet of Sharma’s gruesome legacy. He targeted truck and taxi drivers, murdering them in cold blood. The bodies were disposed of in crocodile-infested canals, ensuring that evidence was devoured and secrets remained buried. It is believed he killed over 50 such drivers, turning rural highways into hunting grounds.
The First Arrest and the Birth of ‘Doctor Death’
Sharma’s reign of terror came to light in 2004 when police exposed his kidney racket and serial killings. The gruesome details of his crimes stunned the public and earned him the chilling moniker ‘Doctor Death’. He was tried in courts across Delhi, Rajasthan, and Haryana, receiving multiple life sentences and even a death sentence from a Gurgaon court.
But the saga was far from over.
The Great Escape
In August 2023, after years behind bars, Devendra Sharma was granted parole for two months. Instead of returning to prison, he vanished without a trace, launching a massive manhunt that spanned six months and several cities, including Aligarh, Jaipur, Delhi, Agra, and Prayagraj. The police’s relentless pursuit finally paid off when they traced him to Dausa, Rajasthan.
To evade capture, Sharma had assumed the identity of a priest, living quietly in an ashram, blending in with the local community. But even in disguise, his past could not be outrun.
Arrest and Interrogation
Delhi Police, acting on a tip-off, raided the ashram and arrested Sharma. The locals breathed a sigh of relief—many had suspected that the mysterious priest might be more than he seemed. With Sharma back in custody, investigators are now probing what he did during his time on the run and whether he continued his criminal activities or operated any rackets under his new identity.
A Legacy of Horror
Sharma’s crimes have left a trail of devastation. Families of murdered drivers still mourn their loved ones, while countless others live with the trauma of being victims of his kidney racket. The sheer scale and brutality of his actions have made him one of India’s most notorious criminals.
His story is both a cautionary tale and a chilling reminder of how evil can hide behind the most respectable of facades. From doctor to killer, healer to destroyer, Devendra Sharma’s journey is a dark chapter in the annals of Indian crime.
Unanswered Questions
As police continue their investigation, the nation is left grappling with questions: Was Sharma truly reformed during his time as a priest, or was it just another mask? Did he act alone, or are there more accomplices still at large? And most disturbingly, how many more victims remain unaccounted for?
Closure for the Victims?
For now, the arrest of Doctor Death brings a measure of closure to the families shattered by his crimes. But the scars he has left behind—on his victims, their families, and society at large—will not heal easily.
As the investigation unfolds, India watches closely, determined that this time, the monster in a doctor’s coat will not escape justice.
