The demolition work at Meerut’s Central Market Complex, a landmark that once rivaled the city’s Abulen Market, was finally completed on the afternoon of the 26th. The site was bustling with police, housing authority officials, and heavy machinery, as bulldozers and JCBs worked tirelessly to bring down the decades-old structure. Despite technical issues halting the process overnight, the operation resumed at dawn, and by midday, nearly 80% of the demolition was finished.

A Complex History of Illegal Construction

Constructed in 1990, the Central Market Complex was part of a larger urban development plan initiated by the Uttar Pradesh Housing and Development Board (Awas Vikas Parishad) in the late 1970s and 1980s. The original schemes, designed to cater to residents’ needs, included both residential and commercial facilities. However, over time, many plot owners altered land usage and illegally constructed shops, showrooms, and commercial complexes on residential plots. By the early 2000s, nearly all residential buildings in the area had been converted into markets, with shops, showrooms, and hotels operating in violation of zoning laws.

From a Slap to Supreme Court: The Legal Saga

The downfall of the Central Market Complex wasn’t just about illegal construction—it was also the result of a dramatic confrontation. On August 19, 2013, a team from the Housing Board arrived to halt unauthorized construction. Tensions escalated when Vinod Arora, a prominent trader and shareholder in the complex, slapped an engineer, Arvind Kumar. The incident made headlines and led to a police report at Nauchandi Police Station.

Following this, the Housing Board sought permission to demolish the complex, but immediate action was delayed. The matter reached the Allahabad High Court, which ruled in favor of demolition. Traders appealed to the Supreme Court, where they received temporary relief, but ultimately, the final verdict upheld the demolition order.

Regret and Realization

Despite years of protests, legal battles, and attempts to regularize the market, traders were unable to save their shops. Many now admit that earlier action and pressure on the government to regularize the complex might have changed the outcome. “If we had started lobbying for regularization back in 2014, perhaps our shops could have been saved,” one trader reflected.

With the Supreme Court’s final order, the demolition began on Saturday and concluded today, marking the end of one of Meerut’s oldest construction disputes. As the dust settles, the city says goodbye to a once-thriving commercial hub, and both authorities and traders are left to reflect on the complex interplay of law, urban planning, and community interests.
