Katrina Kaif’s Father-in-Law Shyam Kaushal Reveals He Once Tried to End His Life After Cancer Diagnosis
Bollywood is in shock after Shyam Kaushal, acclaimed action director and father of actor Vicky Kaushal, courageously opened up about one of the darkest chapters of his life. In a recent interview, Kaushal revealed that he once tried to end his life after being diagnosed with cancer—a revelation that has left many fans emotional and inspired.
Shyam Kaushal, who has been shaping stunts in Bollywood for over 40 years, is the force behind iconic action sequences in blockbusters like ‘Gangs of Wasseypur,’ ‘Bajirao Mastani,’ ‘Dangal,’ ‘Padmaavat,’ and ‘Gadar 2.’ He is also the only action director in India to have won five Filmfare Awards.
During the podcast, Shyam recounted returning from shooting in Ladakh for the film ‘Lakshya’ when he suddenly fell ill and was hospitalized. After a series of tests, doctors suspected stomach cancer. “After the surgery, my abdomen was covered in bandages and I realized the seriousness of my condition. When I was told that my chances of survival were low, I made up my mind to jump out of the hospital window,” he said, recalling the moment he nearly attempted suicide.
However, his weakened condition prevented him from acting on the impulse. Instead, lying in his hospital bed, he started talking to God: “I was 48 at the time, from a small poor village, and I told God if He wanted to take me, I was ready, but asked not to be left weak and helpless.” This spiritual conversation gave him strength and hope.
Shyam spent 50 days recovering in the hospital and ultimately battled back to health. “I remember asking God for 10 more years, as my children were still young. It’s now been 22 years. I’m living on borrowed time given by God,” he reflected emotionally.
Shyam Kaushal began his film journey as a stuntman in the 1980s, later becoming one of India’s most celebrated action directors. Despite having no film industry background, both his sons, Vicky and Sunny Kaushal, have become major stars—a legacy Shyam credits to his hard work and karma.
His candid account of pain, perseverance, and faith has moved fans and colleagues alike, offering a powerful message about resilience in the face of life’s harshest battles.
