Muradabad Train Petrol Bomb Attacks: Night of Terror Ends as Police Nab Lone Wolf, Deepu Saini
In the usually quiet city of Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh, amid the echo of train whistles and the hush of late night, a chilling danger lurked that no one could have expected. What began as a routine night on July 31 took a sinister turn, shining a harsh spotlight on railway security and the unpredictable nature of personal vendettas.
Two Nights of Terror: Trains Targeted With Petrol Bombs
On July 31, as the Lal Kuan Express rushed past Moradabad, passengers were jolted awake by a sudden explosion near a train compartment. Flames erupted, smoke billowed, and chaos ensued. Thankfully, no major casualties were reported, but the fear within the moving train was palpable. The police—both GRP (Government Railway Police) and RPF (Railway Protection Force)—swung into action immediately. However, initial investigations produced no clues: the attacker had vanished into the darkness, leaving only fear behind.
A day later, on August 1, the nightmare repeated itself. This time, the target was the Champaran Satyagrah Express, attacked in the same chilling fashion with a petrol bomb. The incident was eerily similar—another late-night blast, more panic, more questions, and no answers. It was clear to the authorities: this was a calculated pattern, a deliberate challenge to law enforcement.
Manhunt and Surveillance: The Breakthrough
With rising pressure and public anxiety, police ramped up security at Moradabad railway station. CCTV footage was scrutinized, local villages were combed for witnesses, and train surveillance intensified. Still, the attacker remained elusive, heightening the sense of danger. Undercover teams in plain clothes began patrolling the suspect locations, determined to catch the perpetrator in the act.
Finally, their vigilance paid off. Late one evening, their eyes caught a man alighting from an e-rickshaw, clutching a suspicious bottle. Acting swiftly, police apprehended him before he could strike again. The man in question: Deepu Saini, a seemingly ordinary youth from a nearby village.
Who is Deepu Saini? The Motive Unveiled
Upon arrest, Deepu Saini was found with a petrol-filled beer bottle, matchsticks, a few caps, a pouch for sealing, and around ₹560 cash. The bottle was primed for use as a petrol bomb—its cloth fuse ready to ignite. What drove him to such acts? During interrogation, Deepu revealed a tragic past: his elder brother had died by suicide, following relentless harassment from villagers. Consumed by a desire for revenge against those he blamed for his brother’s death, Deepu targeted the trains—a dramatic and dangerous attempt to “get back” at society.
Deepu was neither a notorious criminal nor part of any organized terror ring. He was an anguished, mentally disturbed youth acting alone, seeking twisted justice for his loss.
Prevention, Aftermath, and Remaining Questions
Police’s swift action averted a third and potentially more disastrous attack. Deepu’s arrest ended his spree, but mental health professionals have now been asked to assess his psychological state. Authorities are also investigating whether he acted completely alone or had any accomplices.
Recovered from Deepu were prepared petrol bombs, matchboxes, and materials ready for future attacks—a sobering sign of how close Moradabad came to disaster.
A Wake-Up Call for Railway Security
This incident underscores critical concerns about railway safety, mental health challenges, and the importance of timely, proactive policing. Moradabad returned to normal, but questions linger: What more can be done to safeguard public transport? How can individuals in distress be identified and helped before tragedy strikes?
