Tributes Pour In as Jharkhand’s Legendary Leader Shibu Soren Passes Away at 81

Jharkhand mourns the loss of one of its tallest leaders: Shibu Soren, the founder-patron of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), passed away early Monday morning at Delhi’s Sir Ganga Ram Hospital at the age of 81. His demise has left a void not only for his family but for millions of people—especially the tribal community and those who championed the rights of the marginalized.

A Day of Sorrow for Jharkhand and the Nation

Soon after the news broke, senior leaders, activists, and top politicians flocked to Delhi’s Sir Ganga Ram Hospital to pay their last respects. Leader of Opposition and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi reached the hospital and met an emotional Hemant Soren. In a heartfelt moment, Rahul embraced Hemant, offering comfort to the grieving Jharkhand Chief Minister. Kalpana Soren, too, was in tears as Rahul was seen consoling her.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge also paid tribute to Shibu Soren, fondly remembered as “Guruji”—a term of endearment from his people. Later, Priyanka Gandhi expressed her condolences, sharing that she had also messaged Kalpana Soren and offering strength and prayers for the bereaved family.

A Life Dedicated to Tribal Rights and Social Justice

On social platform X (formerly Twitter), Rahul Gandhi wrote,

“The news of the demise of former Jharkhand Chief Minister and senior JMM leader Shibu Soren Ji is deeply saddening. Soren Ji was a strong voice of the tribal society, and he dedicated his life to fighting for their rights. His role in the creation of Jharkhand will always be remembered. My heartfelt condolences to the Soren family and Guruji’s supporters.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also arrived at the hospital to pay his respects, meeting the distressed family and spending a somber moment with the JMM leader’s loved ones.

Hemant Soren’s Emotional Farewell to His Father

A visibly overwhelmed Hemant Soren addressed the press and supporters:

“Today is a devastating day for us all. The leader of the country’s tribal community, known as a ‘Vishwa Guru’ (world leader) is no longer with us. After a prolonged illness with moments of hope and decline, he finally left us this morning around 8:00. Until his last breath, he remained a fighter. Today, it feels as though we have lost our shelter, someone who protected our people with open arms. He will never be forgotten—he will remain immortal in our hearts.”

The Legacy of “Guruji”

Shibu Soren was more than a political leader—he was the voice, protector, and hope for millions in India’s tribal heartland. His decades-long struggle gave direction to the Jharkhand movement and was instrumental in the creation of the state in 2000. Loved and respected for his humility and tireless advocacy, Soren’s presence was a shield for those most in need of justice.

His passing marks the end of an era but also serves as a reminder of the ideals and courage required to fight for those without a voice. “Guruji” leaves behind a legacy of compassion, courage, and commitment to the cause of the marginalized.

Our deepest condolences to the Soren family, friends, and supporters. Jharkhand and the nation have lost a true hero. May his soul rest in peace.
