Perched at an altitude of around 1,200 meters above sea level, Werebo is often called “The Village Above the Clouds.” Most mornings and evenings, a thick blanket of clouds envelops the village, creating a dreamy, postcard-perfect scene. The iconic, cone-shaped “Mbaru Niang” houses—seven in total—are the heart of the village. These five-story structures, made entirely from bamboo, wood, and palm leaves, are built without nails or cement. Instead, strong rattan ropes hold everything together, and the houses stand on stilts to store firewood and shelter animals underneath.

Inside, several families live together in each house. The lower floors are used for cooking, gathering, and resting, while the upper levels store grains and precious items. The very top, known as “Hekang Kode,” is reserved as a sacred space to honor ancestors.

A Living Heritage

Werebo’s unique architecture and communal lifestyle have earned it UNESCO’s Asia-Pacific Heritage Award of Excellence in 2012. Here, life moves slowly. The villagers share meals, responsibilities, and rituals, living in harmony with nature and each other. The circular shape of their homes symbolizes justice and balance, while the conical design reflects unity and togetherness.

Traditions are still alive—new visitors must first seek permission from the village elders, women weave traditional textiles by hand, and men work in the fields and forests. Once a year, the entire community comes together for the “Penti” ceremony, celebrating their ancestors with music, dance, and feasting, passing down their customs from generation to generation.

There are no hotels or shiny resorts in Werebo. Guests stay with local families, sharing meals and stories, experiencing the warmth and simplicity of village life.
