OUTRAGE IN LUCKNOW: Rapist Released on Bail — Commits Another Rape Within Hours of Walking Out of Jail

Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh — In a horrifying example of systemic failure, a convicted rapist who was recently granted bail has committed another rape within hours of his release, sparking nationwide outrage and questions about the Indian judicial system’s ability to protect women.

The accused, 29-year-old Amit Verma, had been serving a sentence for the brutal rape of a minor in 2022. Despite strong objections from the victim’s family and prosecutors, he was granted interim bail on “humanitarian grounds” by a Lucknow district court last week — citing overcrowding in jails and pending appeal delays.

UP के Lucknow में Rapist को मिली जमानत, जेल से निकलते ही किया Rape

But what followed was nothing short of a nightmare.

On Sunday evening, just six hours after walking free, Amit allegedly stalked and raped a 21-year-old college student in the Chinhat area of Lucknow. The young woman, returning from a coaching center, was reportedly dragged into a construction site, assaulted, and left bleeding and unconscious.

She was found by passersby and rushed to KGMU Trauma Centre, where doctors confirmed severe physical injuries and psychological trauma. The victim is currently in critical condition.

“This wasn’t just a crime — it was a complete breakdown of the justice system,” said one senior police official. “The man was known to be a repeat offender, yet he was allowed to walk free. Now another life is destroyed.”

Police acted swiftly after CCTV footage from nearby shops identified Amit as the suspect. He was re-arrested early Monday morning and is now facing multiple new charges, including rape, criminal intimidation, and attempted murder.

The case has sparked an explosion of anger across India, with hashtags like #JusticeForLucknowGirl, #WhyWasHeFree, and #SystemFailedUs trending on social media. Protests erupted outside the district court and women’s rights groups have begun demanding judicial accountability and urgent bail law reforms.

“This is not just negligence — it’s institutional cruelty,” said activist Renu Sharma of Nari Raksha Manch. “We shout about ‘Beti Bachao’ while letting rapists walk out and destroy another daughter’s life. Who will answer for this?”

Politicians, celebrities, and legal experts are also weighing in.
Actor Taapsee Pannu posted on X (formerly Twitter):

“How many more women must suffer before this system understands that rapists do not deserve leniency?”

Meanwhile, the girl’s family is devastated — and furious.

“They freed a monster,” her father said, sobbing. “He raped one girl, and the court gave him another. Will they release him again now? Or will someone finally stop this madness?”

The UP government has ordered a high-level inquiry, and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has vowed “strictest action” against both the rapist and any officials found responsible for negligence.

Legal experts are now calling for bail restrictions on convicted sexual offenders, especially those with prior records or pending appeals. Many are also questioning the lack of psychological assessments before granting release to violent criminals.

Senior Advocate Meera Goyal told a local channel:

“The courts must understand: bail is not a formality. It is a responsibility. When you grant it blindly, you are gambling with someone’s life.”

As the 21-year-old survivor continues to fight for her life, one question remains on every citizen’s lips: Why was a known rapist ever allowed to walk free — and how many more innocent lives will pay the price for our legal loopholes?

This isn’t just a crime. It’s a wake-up call — and India cannot afford to hit the snooze button again.
