A Wave of Mourning in Jharkhand
On August 4, 2025, a dark cloud of sorrow descended over Jharkhand as the state lost one of its most iconic leaders, Shibu Soren, fondly known as “Dishom Guru.” His passing at a Delhi hospital marked the end of an era for a man who was not just a political stalwart but a symbol of hope for the tribal communities. As news of his demise spread, questions arose: Was it merely illness that claimed his life, or was there a deeper conspiracy? Amidst the grief, a lesser-known chapter of his life emerged into the spotlight—his daughter, Anjani Soren.

The Rise of a Tribal Champion
Born on January 11, 1944, in Ramgarh (now part of Jharkhand), Shibu Soren hailed from a humble middle-class family of the Santhal tribe. His early life was marred by tragedy when, at the tender age of 13, his father was brutally murdered by moneylenders in the Lukaiya Tand jungle in 1957. This devastating loss shattered his family’s economic stability and left young Shibu to fend for himself. Yet, this adversity forged a steely resolve in him. At 19, he founded the Santhal Navayuvak Sangh, marking his first step into the world of activism and politics.

In 1973, Shibu, alongside Bengali Marxist trade unionist A.K. Roy and Kurmi Mahato leader Binod Bihari Mahato, co-founded the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM). The party’s mission was clear—to secure recognition, respect, and rights for the tribal communities. JMM not only fought for tribal honor but also ignited the demand for a separate tribal state, gaining massive support in regions like Chota Nagpur and Santhal Pargana. Shibu became a messiah for the adivasis, often holding his own courts to deliver justice to the marginalized.

A Political Journey Fraught with Challenges
Shibu Soren’s political career was a rollercoaster of triumphs and controversies. His first Lok Sabha election in 1977 ended in defeat, but by 1980, his fortunes turned as he won the Dumka seat, a victory he repeated in 1989, 1991, and 1996. He also served as a Rajya Sabha member in 2002 before resigning to reclaim the Dumka Lok Sabha seat in a by-election. At the peak of his career in 2004, he was appointed a minister in the Manmohan Singh government.

However, his path was not without shadows. The infamous Chirudih massacre of 1975, where he was accused of inciting violence against non-tribals leading to 11 deaths, haunted him for decades. The case forced him to resign as a central minister and even go underground temporarily. Arrest warrants, judicial custody, and public scrutiny became recurring themes in his life. Yet, each time, Shibu emerged stronger, never compromising on his commitment to the tribal cause.

He survived assassination attempts, including a bomb attack on his convoy in 2007 near Dumria village in Deoghar district. His resilience made him a towering figure in Jharkhand politics, serving as Chief Minister thrice—albeit briefly in 2005, then from 2008-2009, and 2009-2010. For 38 years, he helmed JMM as its president, a testament to his enduring influence.

The Final Battle: Illness and Farewell
Shibu Soren’s health had been deteriorating for years. Battling kidney disease, diabetes, heart issues, and having undergone bypass surgery, he was on dialysis when his condition worsened in June 2025. Admitted to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in Delhi, he suffered a brain stroke, and on August 4, 2025, he breathed his last surrounded by family. His funeral saw an outpouring of grief, with leaders like Narendra Modi and Rahul Gandhi expressing condolences. Amid heavy rains, as if nature itself mourned, Shibu was laid to rest with a guard of honor, while chants of “Guruji Amar Rahe” echoed through the air.

His son, Hemant Soren, the current Chief Minister of Jharkhand, shared a heartfelt tribute: “I am going through the toughest days of my life. Not just a father, but the pillar of Jharkhand’s soul is gone. He was my guide, the root of my thoughts, and a sheltering jungle that protected millions from injustice.”

The Hidden Gem: Anjani Soren Steps into the Light
While Shibu’s sons—Hemant and Basant—were well-known, and the eldest, Durga, passed away in 2009, few were aware of his daughter, Anjani Soren. Her emergence into public consciousness after Shibu’s death left many astonished. Anjani is no stranger to politics; in 2024, she contested the Lok Sabha elections from Mayurbhanj, Odisha, as a JMM candidate. Despite having only studied up to the 12th grade, her acumen and stature in politics are remarkable. She works as a commission agent for HPCL and a social worker, maintaining a clean, controversy-free career—unlike her father’s tumultuous journey.

Anjani gained attention when she publicly defended her brother Hemant during a controversy that led to his imprisonment. Her interview, passionately advocating for his innocence, went viral. She further captured hearts during Raksha Bandhan, tying a rakhi to Hemant and praying for his well-being, a moment of sibling love that touched many. Anjani shares a close bond with her family and even wishes to bring her sister-in-law, Sita Soren, back into politics under the JMM banner.

A Vision for Legacy
Anjani aspires not only for personal success but for her family and JMM to expand their influence beyond Jharkhand. She dreams of the party gaining recognition in other states, mirroring the love it receives in her home state. While the future of JMM’s expansion remains uncertain, Shibu Soren’s contributions to Jharkhand and its tribal communities are indelible. Though he is no longer with us, his legacy lives on through his family and the countless lives he transformed.

A Life Worth Remembering
Shibu Soren’s journey—from a boy who lost everything to a leader who became everything for his people—is nothing short of inspiring. His story, intertwined with the rise of Anjani Soren, reminds us of the power of resilience and the strength of family. What do you think of this extraordinary saga?
