Chandan Mishra Murder Case: What did main accused Tauseef Badshah’s brother Nishu Khan say?
Patna – Kolkata | July 2025
In a chilling and brazen act that shocked the nation, a notorious gangster was gunned down inside the intensive care unit of a private hospital in Patna. The victim, Chandan Mishra, was killed in a precision-style execution that not only raises questions about hospital security but also uncovers a larger criminal conspiracy that stretches from Bihar to West Bengal. Days later, five suspects were arrested in Kolkata, exposing a tangled network of deceit, loyalty, and betrayal.
📍The Crime: A Gangster Gunned Down Inside a Hospital
On July 17th, 2025, around 5:30 PM, five men wearing masks and carrying small arms stormed into Room 209 of Paras HMRI Hospital, where Chandan Mishra, a high-profile gangster from Bihar’s Buxar district, was being treated under judicial custody.
Despite being under police watch, the assailants faced little resistance. The killers shot Mishra multiple times in the chest and head at close range. Within minutes, they fled the scene, leaving behind a trail of panic, blood, and unanswered questions. CCTV footage would later reveal disturbing details of their swift, coordinated movements.
The murder shook law enforcement authorities to the core and led to widespread outrage over the security failure. It also triggered an immediate and massive manhunt across state lines.
🚨 Who Was Chandan Mishra?
Chandan Mishra was not just another criminal. He had been associated with multiple murders, extortion cases, and racketeering in Bihar and Jharkhand. A local strongman-turned-gangster, Mishra had amassed both political and criminal influence. He was serving time under various charges and had been out on temporary medical parole due to an ongoing spine condition.
His enemies were many—but few imagined his life would end under such dramatic and public circumstances.
👥 The Arrests in Kolkata
Within 48 hours of the killing, police tracked down five individuals suspected of planning and executing the murder. Among them were:
Tausif Alam, the younger brother of Nishu Alam (a Patna-based builder and associate of Mishra).
Nishu Alam, who was already partially paralyzed due to a prior shooting.
Tausif’s girlfriend, who allegedly arranged lodging in Kolkata.
A caretaker and a nursing aide, both accompanying Nishu due to his medical condition.
They were arrested in a guest house in Anandapur, Kolkata, where they had been hiding since fleeing Bihar by road. According to STF sources, they had originally planned to leave for Delhi.
🎤 The Interrogation: Confessions, Contradictions, and Gaps
During an intense police interrogation captured on video, Nishu Alam denied any prior knowledge of the killing. However, his body language and scattered responses told a more complex story.
“We came to Kolkata for my treatment,” Nishu said, referring to his spine injury. But when asked why his brother Tausif was also with him, and whether he knew Tausif had committed a murder just hours before, Nishu stumbled. “He told me later… that he had done it. I was shocked,” he claimed.
In another part of the interrogation, when shown a video of himself holding a gun, Nishu insisted it was licensed and belonged to his father. He was evasive about the gun’s use and failed to explain why someone with a disability needed to carry a firearm.
🔍 Tausif’s Motive: Revenge, Pressure, or Influence?
Tausif, described by his brother as “immature,” had previously served jail time in arms-related cases. His connection with Chandan Mishra, however, was layered.
At first, Nishu stated that Chandan and his brother were “close friends.” But he later admitted that “something went wrong,” though he claimed not to know what. The motive for the killing remains under investigation, though sources allege that Tausif may have acted under influence from Sheru Singh, another gangster who met Tausif in jail.
Police are also probing whether the murder was part of a broader gang rivalry or a planned betrayal from within Mishra’s inner circle.
🏨 Why Kolkata?
According to police, after the murder, the suspects fled from Patna to Ranchi and then to Kolkata. The choice of Kolkata, as per Nishu, was “random” and primarily influenced by his girlfriend’s presence in the city.
“She arranged the guest house. We were going to take her to Delhi with us,” Nishu said during questioning.
Investigators, however, believe Kolkata was chosen strategically. “They thought crossing into another state would buy them time,” said an STF officer. “They underestimated the speed at which we could track them.”
📱 Digital Trail and Surveillance
Using mobile tower data, CCTV footage, and social media activity, investigators recreated the suspects’ journey. Videos posted on Instagram before and after the murder helped police trace movements, contacts, and even weapons.
In one clip, Tausif is seen posing with a firearm. In another, Nishu’s caretaker is seen outside the hospital hours before the murder, adding to suspicions that this was a coordinated hit.
⚖️ Legal Complications and Charges
The accused now face charges under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code, including:
Section 302 – Murder
Section 120B – Criminal Conspiracy
Arms Act violations
Obstruction of justice
Bihar Police have also questioned hospital staff and investigating possible lapses that allowed such a grave security breach. If staff members are found complicit—or negligent—they too may face prosecution.
🤝 The Sheru Connection
Central to the investigation is the alleged mastermind Sheru Singh, currently imprisoned and previously associated with multiple killings in eastern India. According to Nishu, Sheru met Tausif while both were in jail and offered him financial support, possibly in exchange for loyalty.
“He helped Tausif with bail money,” Nishu admitted. “After that, my brother began calling him ‘dada’.”
Police believe Sheru may have orchestrated the murder from behind bars—using Tausif as a pawn.
👪 Family Ties and Fallout
The Alam family, once seen as a respectable business family in Patna, is now under heavy scrutiny. Nishu, who runs a real estate company, claimed his family had no idea about Tausif’s criminal intentions.
“We never planned any crime in our house,” Nishu said, denying police claims that the murder plot was discussed at their Patna residence.
He added, “My mother was in shock when she found out. We had always warned Tausif not to get involved in trouble.”
🔍 What’s Next?
As the investigation expands, more arrests may follow. Police are looking into whether Tausif and Nishu had help from associates in Kolkata, and whether anyone in the hospital tipped them off about Mishra’s location.
The case also raises questions about how someone under judicial custody—like Chandan Mishra—was left so vulnerable in a private hospital. The Bihar state government has ordered an internal inquiry into the security lapse.
Meanwhile, the court proceedings against the suspects are expected to begin later this month in Patna.
⚖️ A Bigger Problem?
This case is not just about one murder. It underscores the wider problems of gang rivalries, corruption in the prison system, and how influence and money allow criminals to operate even behind bars.
For now, one thing is clear: the murder of Chandan Mishra was not an isolated act of violence. It was the product of a well-woven conspiracy, and a symptom of a much deeper rot in the system.
