Forensic Twist in Former Punjab DGP’s Son’s Death: Postmortem Reveals Syringe Mark, Complicating Overdose Theory

PANCHKULA, HARYANA – The mysterious death of Akil Akhtar, son of former Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Mohammad Mustafa, has taken a complex turn following the release of the postmortem report. The report, which confirms a syringe mark on the deceased’s right elbow, significantly challenges the family’s initial claim that Akil succumbed to a simple drug overdose.

Akil Akhtar, 37, was found unconscious at his Sector 4 residence in Panchkula on the night of October 16 and was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Sector 6 hospital. While the family suggested a general overdose of medications, the forensic evidence points toward a possible intravenous drug use, leading the Special Investigation Team (SIT) to pursue new lines of inquiry, including the possibility of foul play.

The Syringe Mark: A New Angle of Investigation

The postmortem findings revealed a specific seven-centimeter-long syringe mark above Akil’s right elbow. This detail is crucial because it was not initially disclosed by the family, who had attributed the crisis to a general overdose of prescribed medications.

Medical experts suggest that habitual drug users typically begin injecting into the left arm due to ease of access. As those sites develop scarring, users may transition to the right arm. The finding of a single, recent mark on the right elbow suggests that Akil may not have been a habitual, long-term injection drug user, or that the injection may have been administered by someone else, either recently or forcibly.

Former DGP Mohammad Mustafa himself addressed his son’s medical history, stating that Akil had suffered from a psychotic disorder for approximately 18 years and was known to use drugs. He disclosed that Akil’s health had started deteriorating in 2007 and, at one point, his son had become violent, even endangering his daughter-in-law. Mustafa revealed that he had personally handed his son over to the police in the past due to these violent episodes.

The Allegations of Homicide and Conspiracy

The complexity of the case escalated on October 20 when a formal police complaint was filed by Shamshuddin, a resident of Malerkotla, Punjab. Shamshuddin, who identified himself as a former neighbor of Akil’s mother and former Punjab Minister Razia Sultana, claimed that he was compelled to come forward after receiving distressing information.

Shamshuddin’s complaint cited a video Akil had allegedly posted on his social media account on August 27, in which Akil made explosive and disturbing accusations against his family:

Marital Allegations: Akil claimed he had discovered that his father, former DGP Mustafa, was having an “illegal relationship” with his own wife, stating: “She was my wife, but she married Dad.”
Conspiracy Claim: Akil further alleged in the video that his family members were plotting to murder him to silence him following the revelation of the illicit relationship.

Based on Shamshuddin’s complaint, a case was registered at the Mansa Devi Police Station against former DGP Mohammad Mustafa, former Minister Razia Sultana (Akil’s mother), Akil’s sister, and his wife, under charges of murder and criminal conspiracy.

The Investigation Takes Shape: SIT Formed

In response to the gravity of the allegations, the Panchkula Commissioner immediately constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by ACP Vikram Nehra. The SIT includes Inspector Prithvi, PSI Pooja, Sub Inspector Prakash, and cyber expert PSI Ramaswamy.

The SIT has begun aggressively pursuing the case:

Complainant Interrogation: Shamshuddin was summoned for intensive questioning on October 21. The interrogation lasted over five hours, during which the SIT sought to verify the basis of his claims and his motive for coming forward. Shamshuddin claimed proximity to the family through his ancestral neighborhood, stating he knew the Sultana family well.
Family Matter vs. Murder: Shamshuddin admitted that after Akil posted the initial video, he had considered approaching the High Court to intervene but decided against it, deeming it a “family matter.” However, upon receiving the news of Akil’s death, he felt morally obligated to file a complaint.
Media and Evidence: The SIT has taken possession of the video evidence posted by Akil and is examining it for authenticity and contextual relevance to the criminal charges.

The combination of the victim’s own video allegations, the serious nature of the criminal charges, and the new forensic evidence of a syringe mark transforms the case from a suspected drug fatality into a tangled and high-profile criminal investigation involving politically influential figures. The SIT’s ongoing probe is expected to yield further complex revelations as they attempt to reconcile the family’s narrative of illness and overdose with the victim’s claims of an elaborate conspiracy.
