Monalisa’s Journey: From Rudraksha Seller to Viral Sensation and Actress — An Exclusive Interview
Mumbai, April 2025:
The world of Indian cinema and social media has recently witnessed the meteoric rise of Monalisa, a young woman whose journey from selling rudraksha beads at fairs to becoming a viral sensation and aspiring actress has touched millions. In an exclusive interview with N18’s Sudhir Dixit, Monalisa opened up about her humble beginnings, her emotional connection to the Kumbh Mela, her family struggles, and her perspective on her newfound fame and the controversies that have followed.
Humble Beginnings and the Kumbh Mela Connection
Monalisa’s story is one of resilience, simplicity, and an unbreakable bond with her family. Born into a modest household, she spent much of her childhood helping her mother sell rudraksha beads at religious fairs, particularly at the sacred Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj. “My mother and I would go to Mahakal and Kal Bhairav to sell rudraksha beads,” she recalls. “When my mother told me about the upcoming Maha Kumbh Mela, I felt a strange fear just hearing the name Prayagraj. I was hesitant, even scared, to go.”
Despite her initial reluctance, Monalisa eventually accompanied her family to the Kumbh. What followed was a life-changing experience. “When I reached Prayagraj with my cousin, I saw the holy Ganga river for the first time. I was so overwhelmed that I threw all the rudraksha beads into the river and shouted with joy. My cousin thought I had gone mad, but I felt a deep connection with Ganga Maiya, as if I had known her in a previous life.”
Childhood Struggles and Family Responsibility
Monalisa’s journey was never easy. She recounted a traumatic episode from her childhood when she was bitten by a snake. “After the snake bite, my parents borrowed three lakh rupees to get me treated in Khargone. They were so worried and sleepless, but I remember telling the doctor to reassure my parents that I was okay, even though the poison had spread. I pleaded with him, just to give them some hope.”
Her family’s financial struggles meant that Monalisa had to make sacrifices early on. “I left school at a young age to take care of my younger siblings. My parents would travel to Rajasthan and Gujarat to sell rudraksha beads, and I stayed home to cook and look after my brothers and sisters. I learned to make all kinds of food, both vegetarian and non-vegetarian, from a young age.”
The Viral Moment and Its Impact
Monalisa’s life took an unexpected turn when a video of her, captured at the Kumbh Mela, went viral on social media. Her expressive eyes and innocent demeanor captured the hearts of people across India and beyond. “After the video went viral, people everywhere started talking about me. My parents were overjoyed, and even in our neighborhood, people began to respect us more.”
Despite her newfound fame, Monalisa remains grounded and deeply attached to her family. “My father loves spicy food, and he always asks me to cook for him. My younger sister is still very attached to me — she cries whenever I am not around. Even now, I can’t live without my father. My mother and father are my world.”
Education, Dreams, and the Value of Learning
One of Monalisa’s biggest regrets is not being able to complete her education. “Education is very important to me. I feel sad that I couldn’t study because of our circumstances, but I am determined to make sure my siblings get an education. Whatever little I have learned, I teach to my sister and father. We study together at home, and I want all the children in my neighborhood to go to school.”
Monalisa’s aspirations go beyond personal success. “If I ever earn a lot of money, I want to build a school for the children in my area. I want to help them get an education so they don’t have to sell rudraksha beads like we did. If I had made as much money as people claim from my viral videos, I would have already enrolled all the children in school.”
Debunking Rumors and Facing Criticism
With fame comes scrutiny, and Monalisa has not been immune to controversy. Social media, while a platform for her rise, has also been a source of pain due to fake videos and malicious comments. “Many people are making fake videos about me and writing hurtful things. I am from a good family, and it hurts me deeply when people spread lies. Sometimes I cry when I see such things on my phone.”
She appeals to the public with folded hands, “Please, don’t make fake videos or post negative comments. I just want to live my life with dignity. I am learning, growing, and trying to make a better life for myself and my family. Please respect my privacy and my journey.”
The Film Offer and Learning the Craft
Monalisa’s viral fame opened doors to the film industry, and she has begun training in acting and dialogue delivery. “I am still learning acting and haven’t started shooting yet. The film’s director, Sanoj Mishra, treats me like his own daughter. People have made allegations against him, but I can say from my experience that he sees me as a daughter, and I see him as a father figure. I request everyone not to believe in fake stories or spread negativity.”
She shares her excitement about the filmmaking process, “It feels amazing when people do my makeup and prepare me for shoots. The team is very supportive, and many of them say they have a lot of faith in me. Even in my neighborhood, people bless me and tell me not to break their trust.”
Music, Patriotism, and Personal Favorites
Music is a big part of Monalisa’s life. She enjoys singing, especially patriotic songs. When asked about her favorite, she sings a few lines of “Mera Desh Mera Mulk Mera Yeh Watan,” her voice filled with pride and emotion. “I love singing songs about my country and my culture. It gives me strength and hope.”
Navigating Fame and Family Expectations
Monalisa’s family, especially her parents, are her pillars of strength. “My parents are very proud of me, especially since our community usually marries off girls early and doesn’t prioritize education. They have always told me that I can choose when to marry, and I have told them I don’t want to marry anytime soon. I can’t imagine leaving my family behind.”
Her younger sister, just three or four years old, is particularly attached to Monalisa. “She can’t stay away from me, and I can’t stay away from her. Whenever I go anywhere, she gets a fever. Our bond is very special.”
The Reality Behind the Viral Fame
Addressing rumors about her earnings, Monalisa laughs off exaggerated claims. “People say I earned a crore rupees in ten days at the Kumbh Mela. If that were true, I would have used the money to educate all the children in my village. The reality is very different. We still work hard to make ends meet, and I am focused on using whatever opportunities I get for good.”
The Role of Society and Community
Monalisa’s journey has inspired not just her family but her entire community. “Now, when we go to sell rudraksha beads, people recognize us and treat us with respect. My parents are happy that our lives have changed for the better, even if just a little.”
She acknowledges the role of society in her transformation. “Society can be both supportive and critical. I just want people to understand that I am trying my best. I want to live my life honestly and help others do the same.”
A Message to the Public
As the interview draws to a close, Monalisa reiterates her appeal to the public: “Please, let me live my life peacefully. Don’t spread fake videos or write hurtful comments. Respect my privacy and my efforts. I am learning, growing, and trying to make a difference. That’s all I ask.”
She thanks her supporters and wishes to continue her journey with their blessings. “I am grateful for the love and support I have received. I hope to keep learning, improving, and making my family proud.”
Conclusion: The Heart of Monalisa’s Story
Monalisa’s story is not just about viral fame or a shot at stardom. It is about perseverance, family, and the dreams of a young woman who wants to lift herself and her community through education and hard work. Her journey from the banks of the Ganga to the sets of a film is a testament to the power of hope and resilience.
As she prepares for her first film and continues to learn and grow, Monalisa remains a symbol of innocence, determination, and the unbreakable spirit of India’s daughters. Her message is clear: respect, kindness, and the pursuit of knowledge can change lives, one step at a time.
