Tensions Erupt in Fatehpur Over Dispute Between Temple and Tomb Claims: Area Turns into Police Zone

A major controversy has erupted in the Abu Nagar area of Fatehpur, Uttar Pradesh, revolving around an old structure known as the tomb of Nawab Abdul Samad. The situation has become so tense that the entire neighborhood has been turned into a police zone.

The conflict began when some groups, including the district president of the BJP and several Hindu organizations, claimed the structure is not a tomb, but rather a centuries-old Shiva and Krishna temple. They alleged that the temple was converted into a tomb, citing the presence of lotus flowers and trishul (trident) symbols as evidence of its original Hindu identity.

Following these claims, the atmosphere in the area grew charged. Hindu organizations announced plans to hold religious rituals at the site on August 11, 2025. However, the local administration strictly prohibited any form of worship at the location and set up barricades around the structure to prevent entry.

Despite these security measures, a large crowd from Hindu organizations gathered at the site early in the morning. The police arrangements were overwhelmed by the size of the crowd, which then proceeded to break into the tomb and began vandalizing the dargah. In response, members of the Muslim community arrived at the scene, leading to slogans being shouted from both sides and escalating tensions. The situation further deteriorated when stone-pelting began.

Police quickly intervened and made efforts to separate the two groups, eventually bringing the situation under control. The Muslim side insists that the tomb is centuries old and officially recognized in government records, accusing others of unnecessarily stirring up trouble by inventing the temple narrative. Meanwhile, Hindu groups maintain that the issue is a matter of faith for them and have vowed to hold prayers at the site regardless of opposition.

The authorities now find themselves caught in the middle, attempting to mediate between the two sides. Additional police forces have been deployed from outside the area to maintain order. While the situation has somewhat calmed for now, tensions remain high and the atmosphere is still charged.

This dispute is no longer just about a single structure—it has become a matter of identity and emotions for both communities. Such incidents carry the potential to spark further conflicts at any moment.
