BJD MLA Faces Backlash After Attempting to Bully Panchayat Secretary Over the Phone

In Bihar, a recent phone call between RJD MLA Bhai Virendra and a local panchayat secretary has gone viral, highlighting increasing assertiveness among government employees and changing dynamics of political power in the state.

The incident unfolded when Bhai Virendra, a senior MLA from Maner constituency and considered close to Lalu Yadav, called a panchayat secretary named Sandeep Kumar regarding the issuance of a death certificate for Avinash Kumar, husband of Rinki Devi. Expecting prompt compliance, the MLA used a tone reminiscent of old feudal politics, demanding the work be done without delay or resistance.

However, the secretary stood his ground. Refusing to be intimidated, Sandeep Kumar replied firmly: “If you speak respectfully, I will also talk to you with respect. Threats do not work here. I am not someone who can be cowed down.” This unexpected defiance rattled the MLA, who is said to have enjoyed the reverence of local officials throughout his four terms in office.

The exchange, which included heated words about official protocol and the limits of political power, was allegedly recorded and quickly spread on social media. The leaked audio triggered a wave of public support for the secretary, with many praising him for standing up to political bullying—a move that mirrored the changing mood among both government employees and the general public in Bihar.

Embarrassed by the incident, Bhai Virendra took to Facebook, claiming his words had been taken out of context and that the recording was “one-sided” and “edited.” He expressed regret over the harsh language but also warned of legal action under India’s IT Act for broadcasting the call. Many users, however, found the apology unconvincing, pointing out that officials should be protected from such intimidation regardless of political rank.

This is not the first time Bhai Virendra has made headlines for his controversial remarks. Recently in the Bihar Assembly, he clashed with the Deputy CM, telling him, “This house does not belong to anyone’s father.” The Assembly Speaker had to intervene, but Virendra refused to apologize.

Following the incident with the secretary, the state government issued a notice to Sandeep Kumar to respond to the MLA’s complaint, while the secretary registered his own complaint against the MLA under SC/ST Act provisions. The controversy has divided opinion, with some suggesting that while officials should show respect to elected representatives, politicians must also treat subordinate staff with dignity and decorum.

Analysts say the episode marks a significant shift in Bihar’s political culture. The days when a mere phone call from a politician was enough to instil fear may be coming to an end. Increasingly, common citizens and lower-level employees are demanding respectful treatment and are prepared to stand their ground—and, as this incident shows, win public backing for doing so.
