Government Bans 25 OTT Apps for Obscene Content; Ekta Kapoor Responds to ALT Ban
In a significant move against obscene content on digital media, the government yesterday took strict action by banning 25 OTT (Over-The-Top) applications accused of spreading vulgarity. The two most prominent names in the list were the Ullu App and ALT, formerly known as ALTBalaji.

ALT was co-founded by television mogul Ekta Kapoor and her mother Shobha Kapoor, which immediately put Ekta Kapoor in the headlines following the ban. Ekta, the daughter of legendary actor Jeetendra, has faced controversy multiple times due to the content on the ALT platform. As soon as the government order came into force, Ekta Kapoor released a statement on social media, distancing herself from the OTT platform and expressing her displeasure.
Taking to her Instagram account, Ekta declared she has no association with the platform anymore. She wrote, “We want to clarify that Ekta Kapoor and Shobha Kapoor have no connection whatsoever with ALT. They completely exited ALT in June 2021. Hence, if anyone claims any association now, we categorically deny it. We urge the media to report accurate and correct information. Balaji Telefilms Limited adheres to all rules and regulations and operates honestly and responsibly.”
ALT frequently came under legal scrutiny due to its bold and sometimes obscene content, particularly its adult-themed web series, which often drew public criticism. According to a report by News18, in 2015, Ekta Kapoor allegedly added a “nudity clause” in ALT’s contracts, preventing actors from refusing to perform bold scenes or dialogues—a stipulation many, especially new actors, found objectionable.

Despite concerns from the film board and many in the industry, Ekta Kapoor reportedly continued her line of erotic shows and enforced the nudity clause.
As recently as a few days ago, according to Dainik Jagran, Ekta Kapoor defended the content being served on ALT in a media interview.
The controversy surrounding ALT and the government’s ban on OTT platforms for obscene content has once again fueled debate about the regulation of digital platforms and artistic freedom in India.
