Chandra Grahan 2025: वाराणसी और Haridwar में दिन में हुई Ganga Aarti | Blood Moon Lunar Eclipse 2025

Lunar Eclipse Alters Ganga Aarti Tradition in Varanasi and Haridwar

Tonight’s lunar eclipse has led to changes in the revered Ganga Aarti tradition in Varanasi. Usually performed in the evening, the world-famous Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat was held during the afternoon today. This is only the fifth time in 34 years that the evening aarti had to be conducted during the day.

Although the lunar eclipse will begin at 10 PM, the “Sutak” period—a time considered inauspicious—started in the afternoon. Because of this, the Ganga Aarti was performed at Dashashwamedh Ghat and 80 other ghats earlier in the day. Additionally, the doors of many temples were closed as a precaution.

In Haridwar, Uttarakhand, the Ganga Aarti on Har Ki Pauri was also held in the afternoon, with many devotees participating. Local people explained that this change was due to the Sutak period.

The Sutak period begins nine hours before the eclipse, so temple doors were closed from 12:57 PM. The usual evening aarti was performed at 12:30 PM, ahead of the Sutak period. Ritual processions reached their designated places, and temple doors will reopen tomorrow morning for the usual rituals and prayers.

During the eclipse, devotees are encouraged to bathe in the Ganga, chant the names of deities, read holy scriptures, and purify their homes with Ganga water once the eclipse ends. Morning prayers and rituals will resume after sunrise when temple doors reopen.
