Indian Tourist Arrested for Alleged Shoplifting in Illinois, USA; Viral Video Sparks Online Debate
An Indian woman named Anaya Ablani, visiting the United States as a tourist, has found herself at the center of controversy after being detained by police at an Illinois retail store for alleged shoplifting. The incident, which occurred on May 1, 2025, has since gone viral on social media, prompting debate both in the U.S. and India.
Incident Details
According to reports, Anaya spent around seven hours inside the store, located in the state of Illinois. During this time, she was seen wandering through the aisles, allegedly pretending to be busy on her phone. Police and store staff claim that she attempted to leave the premises with merchandise worth approximately $300 (₹11,617), without making payment.
CCTV footage and police bodycam videos show Anaya being stopped by store employees and questioned by law enforcement as she tried to exit the store with a trolley full of goods. In the footage, Anaya repeatedly insists she did not intend to steal: “I am not from this country. I am not going to be staying here. I’m sorry if I caused trouble. If needed, I am ready to pay for everything I took.”
Despite her apologies, officers informed her that her actions constituted a serious offense under Illinois law, where theft involving goods valued over $300 is treated as a felony. Initially, Anaya denied the allegations, but during police interrogation, she reportedly admitted her wrongdoing and requested that she be allowed to pay for the goods and be released.
Public Outcry and Online Reactions
The video of the incident has sparked outrage online. Many users condemned Anaya’s actions, expressing concern that such behavior tarnishes the reputation of Indians abroad. “When someone commits such a shameful act with the Indian identity overseas, it’s not just one person but the nation’s image at stake,” one user commented. Another wrote, “As a guest, how can someone break the laws of another country with such audacity?”
Some also questioned how these incidents affect the perception of Indian visitors and the importance of respecting local laws while abroad.
Legal Consequences and Ongoing Investigation
Anaya Ablani is currently in police custody, with the investigation ongoing. Illinois law treats theft of goods over $300 as a grave offense, and the case may proceed to court, depending on further findings.
