Dark Truths Behind the Glamour: Aishwarya Rai, Subhash Ghai, and Bollywood’s Unspoken Power Games
Hello everyone, welcome back. Today we’re diving into a topic that has often been whispered about but rarely discussed openly – the strange and unsettling connections between Bollywood megastar Aishwarya Rai and controversial director Subhash Ghai.
This subject caught my attention when I came across the infamous sting operation featuring actor Shakti Kapoor. In that video, he was seen taking names of several powerful people in the industry, including Aishwarya Rai, Subhash Ghai, Preity Zinta, and Rani Mukerji, hinting that these actresses too had to ‘compromise’ to survive in the film world.
The Disturbing Photoshoots
Aishwarya Rai worked with Subhash Ghai in the 1999 film Taal, which he directed. When I looked at the photoshoots and promotional posters for this film, something felt distinctly odd. It is normal for directors to appear in behind-the-scenes photos, but in this case, Ghai was not just in the background. He was posing right between the lead actors, often holding Aishwarya from behind – an act that felt creepy and unnecessary.
At that time, Aishwarya was only 26, while Subhash Ghai was almost 56 – three decades her senior. Many wondered why the lead actors, Anil Kapoor and Akshaye Khanna, were sidelined in these promotional images while the director occupied centre stage, holding the actress in ways that looked uncomfortable.
Power Plays and Public Shaming
Subhash Ghai’s behaviour towards Aishwarya Rai wasn’t limited to physical proximity. Later, he gave interviews portraying her negatively, claiming she was overly aggressive about her work and often sidelined co-actresses. He cited Josh, where reportedly Aishwarya ensured her scenes with Shah Rukh Khan remained dominant while the second female lead’s presence was reduced.
But was this criticism justified, or was it part of a pattern where powerful men tried to control narratives around successful women who wouldn’t bend to their will?
Mahima Chaudhry’s Shocking Revelation
Mahima Chaudhry, who debuted under Subhash Ghai’s banner with Pardes, revealed in an interview how she was bullied by him. She was in her 20s, building her career, while he was in his 50s. Mahima said Ghai tried to control every aspect of her professional life and when she refused, he systematically attempted to destroy her career.
He reportedly called other producers and directors, instructing them not to cast her. Worse, he published an advertisement in a magazine claiming that working with Mahima without his permission was a “breach of contract.” Mahima clarified there was no such clause in any contract – this was merely a power play to isolate her from the industry.
Manisha Koirala’s Similar Experience
Manisha Koirala, who also debuted with a Subhash Ghai film, allegedly faced similar controlling behaviour. Reports claimed her mother once revealed how Ghai attempted to push Manisha towards compromising situations, hinting at the casting couch culture. Some articles suggested that during on-set meetings in vanity vans, Ghai would enter alone, asking her assistants to wait outside – raising questions about his true intentions.
Targeting Rekha
Subhash Ghai was also notorious for his harsh comments about actress Rekha. After her husband’s tragic suicide, Ghai publicly shamed Rekha, stating that she had brought such disgrace upon the film industry that no respectable family would ever accept an actress like her as their daughter-in-law. He further claimed that directors would hesitate to work with her again, questioning how audiences could accept her as the embodiment of the pure, righteous Indian woman.
While Rekha’s life was undeniably filled with controversies, Ghai’s comments exposed the industry’s deeply patriarchal mindset – where moral standards were imposed on women while men’s transgressions were ignored.
Bollywood’s Hypocrisy
This brings us to a bigger question: why do these powerful men never hold themselves to the same standards they set for women? They speak about ethics and values but never introspect on their own exploitative behaviour. If men were judged by the same standards, would any self-respecting family want them as their sons-in-law?
Directors like Subhash Ghai, Mahesh Bhatt, Ram Gopal Varma, and Boney Kapoor have all been caught on camera behaving inappropriately with actresses. From Boney Kapoor touching Urvashi Rautela uncomfortably to Mahesh Bhatt leaning excessively close to women during interviews – these behaviours are neither professional nor acceptable.
Ram Gopal Varma’s party videos also show his disturbing conduct. Yet, despite these visible red flags, the industry continues to protect them. Why?
Fear of Speaking Out
Many people ask, “If these famous actresses faced such things, why didn’t they speak up earlier?” The answer is simple – power. These directors and producers held so much influence that any actress speaking against them risked career destruction. They were blacklisted, bullied, and emotionally shattered, with no social media platforms back then to raise their voices or gain public support.
Mahima Chaudhry spoke about her experience only years later, when her career was stable and she no longer feared repercussions. Similarly, Manisha Koirala avoided working with Ghai after her initial experience.
The Sting Operations
Coming back to Shakti Kapoor’s sting operation, his statements indirectly confirmed that several top actresses had to compromise to secure work. Although such videos shocked audiences, they rarely led to justice for the victims. The system ensured silence – newspapers were manipulated, interviews were deleted, and dissenting voices were suppressed under fear.
The Silent Suffering
Behind the glamorous posters, red carpets, and award shows lies a world built on the silent suffering of many talented women. Actresses who refused to bend to these powerful men’s wills were systematically pushed out, their careers replaced by those willing to comply.
Even Madhuri Dixit, often known as Ghai’s favourite, raised eyebrows for always receiving special treatment from him. Many wondered what went behind this favouritism and what it cost her.
Unreported Harassment Cases
Over the years, several unreported cases emerged where aspiring actresses and models spoke about being called for ‘meetings’ that turned uncomfortable. Some were asked to give massages, while others were forcibly kissed. Most did not file official complaints out of fear, while some who did later withdrew their cases, overwhelmed by threats or emotional trauma.
Changing Times
Thankfully, the digital era has given people more power to call out predators. Today, such sting operations or abusive behaviour would lead to public outrage and career damage for these men. But back then, it was different. Directors and producers operated like kings, silencing any opposition through money, power, and threats.
The Big Question
Why are these men so afraid of being held accountable by the same moral standards they impose on women? Why does society continue to excuse powerful male figures while scrutinising every decision a woman makes?
Final Thoughts
The stories of Aishwarya Rai, Mahima Chaudhry, Manisha Koirala, and Rekha all reveal one undeniable truth – Bollywood is not just about talent and glamour. It is also about power games, where the strong exploit the weak, and where silence is the price for survival.
These women’s experiences are reminders of how important it is to call out hypocritical behaviour and stand up for those who cannot speak for themselves. Let us hope the industry continues to change for the better, where respect, consent, and dignity are non-negotiable for everyone – regardless of their gender or status.
