Devotees’ Dedication Shines During Dandavat Pilgrimage to Mahadev’s City

The vibrant spirit of devotion was on full display as a group of devotees, known as “dandi bams,” made their arduous journey to the holy city of Mahadev (Deoghar) through the traditional ‘dandavat pranam’ ritual. This practice involves lying flat on the ground, standing up, and then repeating the process continuously as a form of worship and perseverance.

Speaking to one of the “bam jis,” who hails from Aurangabad district, he described the journey’s intensity: “I began my dandavat yatra on the 9th and it has been 18 days so far. With Mahadev’s blessings, our wishes for our families’ well-being keep us going. Sometimes wishes come true, some are still pending, but faith remains strong.”

Despite temperatures, long distances, and the challenges of maintaining the ritual through dust and heat, these devotees showed remarkable resolve. “There are difficulties, but every devotee faces some hardship. I can manage because of God’s grace,” another participant explained.

Traveling over 90–95 kilometers already, with another 16–17 kilometers yet to go, the group camped overnight, cooked their meals, and cycled part of the way. The journey began in Sultan Ganj, and as they neared the Jharkhand border, just 5–6 kilometers from their destination, the mood was both exhausted and jubilant.

On being asked how they kept up their spirits and managed their arrangements, they were unanimous: “The arrangements are fine, and we never lack any service during this holy journey. We may face the sun or sweat, but the blessings of Mahadev drive us on.”

The journey isn’t made for personal gain alone. Many devotees undertake this pilgrimage out of faith and as an act of gratitude for prayers answered—some for family’s happiness, others for health or personal wishes. “Sometimes you get blessings quickly, other times you wait. But faith is never lost with Mahadev,” they said.

There was camaraderie, the rhythmic chant of “Bol Bam! Har Har Mahadev!” and traditional music played on damru drums as they continued their trek, spirits undaunted.

As the pilgrimage heads closer to completion in Baba Dham, these dandi bams serve as a testament to unwavering faith and the power of collective devotion.
