The Headlines That Shocked the Country
News channels across India buzzed with the story:
“Why did this girl marry two real brothers? What compulsion led her to take this extraordinary step? Why did neither her family nor her community object? Is polyandry even legal in India?”
Let’s unravel the mystery behind this unique wedding, the ancient tradition it follows, and the people who chose to revive it.
The Sacred Bond—With a Twist
Marriage is often described as a sacred bond between two people, bringing together not just individuals, but entire families. Traditionally, it’s a union between one man and one woman. But the recent wedding in Himachal Pradesh turned this idea on its head.
Meet Sunita Chauhan, a well-educated woman from Kunhat village, and the two brothers she married—Pradeep and Kapil Negi, both from Shillai. Their three-day wedding celebration, held between July 12th and 14th, was as grand as any traditional Indian wedding, complete with folk songs, dances, and rituals unique to the Hatti community.
But what made this wedding truly remarkable was that Sunita married both brothers, following an ancient practice known as polyandry.
A Tradition Rooted in History
Polyandry, though rare in modern times, has deep roots in certain regions of Himachal Pradesh, especially among the Hatti tribe in Sirmaur, Kinnaur, and Lahaul-Spiti districts. Locally, it’s known as the “Draupadi tradition,” named after the legendary princess from the Mahabharata who was married to five brothers.
Under this tradition, a woman may marry two or more brothers, and the family raises children together. Typically, the eldest brother is considered the legal father, but both share parental responsibilities.
But why does this tradition exist? The answer lies in the region’s geography and economy. In Himachal’s hilly areas, land is the main source of income. If each brother married separately, the family land would be divided, making it difficult to sustain livelihoods. By marrying one woman, the family remains united, and the land stays intact.
A Wedding Like No Other
For the villagers, this marriage was nothing unusual. Pradeep and Kapil’s family celebrated with pride. Sunita’s family was equally supportive. For them, this was not a scandal, but a cherished tradition—one that keeps families united and preserves their ancestral lands.
Even more surprising, all three are highly educated. Pradeep works for the state’s water department, while Kapil has a job abroad. Sunita herself is well-qualified. Their decision wasn’t forced; it was made together, out of respect for their heritage.
Sunita herself said, “This marriage was my choice. No one forced me. I know this tradition and I chose it willingly. I have full faith in this bond.”
Pradeep added, “It was a mutual decision. It’s about trust, care, and shared responsibility.”
Kapil, speaking from abroad, said, “Even though I live far away, this marriage keeps us together as a family. We will always support and love our wife.”
Is Polyandry Legal?
In Himachal Pradesh, polyandry is not just a tradition—it also has legal recognition. While most of India only recognizes monogamous marriages, the state’s unique customs are protected under local law.
A Tradition Under Threat?
Despite its deep roots, polyandry is fading as modern values spread. Most young people today prefer monogamous relationships. Yet, for Sunita, Pradeep, and Kapil, reviving this tradition was a way to honor their culture and remind the new generation of its importance.
The villagers believe this custom helps prevent migration from the hills and strengthens family bonds.
“It’s not just a tradition, it’s our heritage,” they say.
What Do You Think?
Is this a practical way to preserve family unity and property? Or is it a relic of the past that no longer fits today’s world?
