Tragedy in Shillong: Indore Woman Missing, Husband Found Dead — Family Suspects Kidnapping and Human Trafficking

A tragic and mysterious case has gripped both the states of Madhya Pradesh and Meghalaya, after an Indore-based couple’s holiday in Shillong took a horrifying turn. Sonam, a young woman who had traveled to Meghalaya with her husband Raja Raghuvanshi, is still missing. Her husband’s dead body was found days after the couple was reported missing, sparking allegations of foul play, human trafficking, and police negligence from their grieving families.

Disappearance During a Trip

Sonam and Raja, recently married, had gone on a holiday to Shillong, Meghalaya. Their family described the couple as happy and excited before their trip. However, a few days into the journey, all communication was lost. Concern grew after repeated calls to their phones went unanswered.

Eventually, Raja’s body was discovered in a gorge, partially decomposed. He was last seen wearing a white shirt, and interestingly, a white shirt was found near the body along with a mobile phone—located about 10 feet away from the corpse. The family has questioned the circumstances of these findings, asking how Raja’s shirt could be found off his body and whether the phone had been intentionally placed apart to mislead investigators.

Adding to the mystery is the fact that Sonam, who was also last seen in a white shirt, remains unaccounted for. No trace of her has been found, and her two mobile phones are still missing.

Family’s Suspicion and Fear

Sonam’s parents strongly believe that she may have been kidnapped. In an emotional interview, they expressed fear that she could be a victim of human trafficking, possibly taken across the Bangladesh border, which lies relatively close to the site of disappearance. Her mother and father, still clinging to hope, believe she is alive and held captive—possibly in a remote area or even within a city, hidden from authorities.

“We are not giving up. We truly believe our daughter is alive. Maybe she’s in a jungle, or maybe someone has locked her away in a city, but she is out there. That is why we are demanding a CBI investigation,” her father said.

The family has publicly appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah to intervene. They say local police have not done enough and failed to take necessary action when they first reported the couple missing.

Allegations Against Locals and Lack of Police Cooperation

The family has pointed fingers at several individuals who they believe may be involved. These include staff at the local hotel where the couple had stayed and a driver who had driven them in the area. According to them, their suspicions were heightened when hotel staff allegedly threatened Raja’s brother Govind and another family member who had gone to Shillong to help with the investigation.

“The hotel owner told us to stop defaming their business and the tourism image of Meghalaya. They said things like ‘such incidents happen all the time’ and even threatened us when we pushed for answers,” said a family member.

Despite multiple complaints and appeals, local authorities were initially reluctant to act. According to the family, Govind and other relatives repeatedly told the police about threats and suspicious behavior, yet were denied any security or protection. Only after politicians from Madhya Pradesh contacted their counterparts in Meghalaya did the police begin to show minimal cooperation.

Unanswered Questions and Missing Evidence

The circumstances surrounding Raja’s death remain murky. Family members are demanding answers about inconsistencies in the evidence:

Only one raincoat was found, although both Raja and Sonam were said to have worn them due to the rainy season in Shillong.

The mobile phone was found at a considerable distance from the body.

The white shirt’s identity—whether it belonged to Raja or Sonam—is still undetermined.

Two of Sonam’s mobile phones are still missing.

No clear timeline or witness account has surfaced to determine what happened between the couple’s last sighting and the discovery of Raja’s body.

These unexplained details, combined with the lack of urgency in the police response, have deepened the family’s suspicion that this is more than just a random crime—it may involve a larger criminal network.

Appeals for Swift Action

In a letter written to the Prime Minister, the family pleaded for federal investigation and immediate deployment of CBI officials to Shillong.

“We believe that only a neutral, national-level agency like the CBI can properly investigate what happened. Time is running out. Every passing day is crucial. If Sonam has been kidnapped, her life could be in danger,” the letter stated.

The family is also asking for the case to be taken up under laws related to kidnapping, trafficking, and conspiracy. They believe that multiple people could be involved in orchestrating this crime, possibly even linked to cross-border trafficking rings.

Hope Remains

Despite the trauma, the family refuses to lose hope. “She left with dreams in her eyes, and we are praying every moment that she comes back safely,” her mother said tearfully.

The case has raised questions not just about safety in tourist areas, but also about the accountability of local law enforcement and the need for stronger inter-state cooperation in such sensitive matters.

As of now, Sonam remains missing, and the mystery deepens. Her parents, along with the rest of the country, are waiting for answers—and above all, for her safe return.
