Shilpa Shirodkar Breaks Silence on Shocking Death Rumour During Raghuveer Shoot: “I Was Pronounced Dead While Shooting in Manali”

In a shocking revelation that revisits a dark moment from the 1990s, actress Shilpa Shirodkar recently opened up about a horrifying rumor that spread like wildfire during the shoot of the film Raghuveer in 1995. The actress was wrongly reported as being “shot dead,” sending shockwaves through her family, colleagues, and fans. In a recent interview, Shilpa candidly recalled how the baseless news caused chaos and concern — and may have been part of a misguided marketing ploy.

The Day Shilpa “Died”

“It was 1995,” Shilpa began. “I was shooting for Raghuveer in Kullu-Manali. We were filming an intense action sequence and due to the remote location, communication with the outside world was quite limited.”

What happened next was nothing short of surreal. Without her knowledge, a rumor broke out claiming that the actress had been shot and killed on set. “When I came back to the hotel, I had 20 to 25 missed calls on the landline,” she remembered. “My parents were panicking. My relatives were crying. There was a newspaper headline that read: ‘Shilpa Shirodkar Shot Dead.’”

A Marketing Gimmick Gone Too Far?

Shilpa was stunned not just by the false report, but by what she discovered later — the possibility that the rumor had been deliberately planted as part of a publicity stunt.

“At first, I was confused and then I was angry. There was no PR machinery in those days like we have now. Everything was word of mouth, or in the newspapers. But someone thought it would be clever to generate buzz by spreading a death hoax,” she revealed. “I didn’t even know this was happening until days later.”

Despite the emotional distress caused to her and her family, the film reportedly did well at the box office. “That doesn’t justify what happened. You don’t fake someone’s death for marketing,” she added firmly.

The Emotional Aftermath

Reflecting on the incident nearly three decades later, Shilpa admitted it left a lasting impact on her. “You don’t forget something like that. My family was traumatized. My mother couldn’t stop crying. What kind of industry does that to their own people?” she asked. “The press should have verified such news before publishing it. But back then, nobody did fact-checking.”

She also mentioned how the situation might have spiraled further if social media had existed at that time. “Imagine if it had happened today. Twitter, Instagram — it would have gone viral in minutes. Thankfully, at that time, the damage was still somewhat containable.”

Shilpa’s Career and Resilience

Shilpa Shirodkar, known for her graceful presence on screen in the 90s, starred in several popular films including Hum, Aankhen, Pehchaan, and Bewafa Sanam. Though she took a break from films in the early 2000s after getting married and settling abroad, she returned to Indian television with shows like Ek Mutthi Aasmaan and Silsila Pyar Ka.

Now, she is all set to make her big-screen comeback in an ambitious multilingual project titled Jatadhari, a mystical thriller revolving around the secrets of the Anantha Padmanabha Swamy temple. “I’ve always been spiritually inclined,” she said. “This role feels like the right one at the right time.”

In Jatadhari, she stars alongside Sudheer Babu, who is undergoing intense training for his role, and Sonakshi Sinha, who will be seen in a pivotal character. The film is being shot in both Telugu and Hindi, and promises to be a visually grand experience.

A Star Who Deserved Better

Looking back, Shilpa’s ordeal speaks volumes about the lack of ethics in certain pockets of the entertainment industry. Faking a death is not just in poor taste — it’s dangerous. It leaves emotional scars and triggers unnecessary panic. “It should never have happened,” Shilpa says, “but I’m stronger now. I survived the industry, the rumors, the silence — and I’m still here.”

She urges today’s filmmakers and PR teams to act with more integrity and compassion. “There are many ways to promote a film. Lying about someone’s death shouldn’t be one of them.”

The Industry Then and Now

The 90s were a different era, she acknowledges. “Back then, actors didn’t have managers, stylists, or publicists. We did our own makeup, traveled without security, and handled crises by ourselves. The support systems actors have now simply didn’t exist. You had to be thick-skinned.”

Despite these challenges, Shilpa continues to look at her career with pride. “I may not have done hundreds of films, but the ones I did — they mattered. And I still get love from fans. That means everything.”

Fans Still Remember

Even though she spent a long time away from the spotlight, fans still remember Shilpa Shirodkar fondly. Her grace, poise, and screen presence continue to resonate with audiences who grew up watching her. “People still come up to me and say, ‘We miss seeing you in films.’ That’s the biggest reward.”

As she steps back into the world of cinema, the incident from 1995 remains a reminder of how dangerous and careless rumors can be — but also how resilience and truth can eventually shine through.
