From Stardom to Struggles: Bengali Actress Found Destitute on the Streets, Rescued by Locals
The film industry is often celebrated for transforming ordinary individuals into stars, taking them from rags to riches. However, sometimes, this glamorous world also witnesses stories moving in the opposite direction—where once-prominent faces fall from grace and are left to fend for themselves.
A recent shocking incident has emerged from the industry. Renowned Bengali actress Sumhar Chaudhary (sometimes credited as Sumi Har Chaudhary), known for her roles in films and TV shows, was found wandering the streets in a distressed and unrecognizable state. She was discovered seeking shelter from the rain by the roadside, dressed in shorts and a black shirt and scribbling something on a piece of paper while muttering in English—her words incoherent to those around her.
When approached by locals, Sumhar struggled to speak clearly but managed to introduce herself, saying, “I am Sumhar Chaudhary, an actress.” At first, people mistook her for an ordinary woman and ignored her pleas, but upon searching her name online, they were shocked to discover her extensive body of work.
Sumhar Chaudhary had appeared in several Bengali films, including supporting roles in acclaimed movies like Dwitiya Purush and Khashi Katha – Egota Shaga, where she worked with legendary actor Naseeruddin Shah. She also acted in television series such as Rupasagare, Monare Manush, and Tomay Ashi Pase Thakle. Her journey is a grim reminder of how fame can be fleeting.
Reports indicate that the actress appeared to be mentally unstable at the time of discovery, repeatedly talking about her film and television career. As her condition worsened, locals arranged for her to be sent to a shelter home for her safety. Meanwhile, efforts are underway by police to contact her family, but no relatives have come forward yet. If no family is found, it is likely she may remain in the shelter for an extended period.
The incident has raised serious questions about the well-being and support systems available for film and television artists once the limelight fades.
