How the Racket Operated

According to the women’s own statements during police interrogation, they would meet customers in various alleys and secluded spots across Katihar. After completing their work, they often returned to the hospital to rest. One of the women revealed that she had been working in this trade for two to three months, sometimes meeting four to five customers in a single day. Each customer typically paid between ₹300 and ₹500, with the women earning up to ₹2,000–3,000 daily.

The women explained that after receiving payments from customers, a portion of the money was taken by a handler or “madam,” while the rest was sent to their families or used for their own expenses. One woman admitted that she had run away from home and started this work after being introduced to the handler by an acquaintance.

Security Guard’s Vigilance Leads to Arrest

The operation came to light when hospital security received a tip-off about two unfamiliar women regularly staying at the hospital without any medical reason. Upon questioning, the women initially claimed they were only there to rest. However, further investigation revealed their involvement in sex work. Security guards found condoms and other items in their possession, further confirming their activities.

Navin Kumar Singh, Security In-Charge at Katihar Sadar Hospital, explained,
“We received information that two unknown women frequently visit the hospital. When our guards questioned them, they failed to provide any valid reason for their presence. Upon further inquiry, they admitted to being involved in prostitution and using the hospital as a place to rest between clients.”

Confessions and Modus Operandi

During questioning, the women disclosed the financial aspects of their operation. One stated,
“We usually get ₹500 from each customer, but ₹200 is taken by our handler. On a busy day, we can meet four or five clients, making up to ₹3,000. Sometimes, the handler only feeds us and keeps the money.”

They also revealed that they had been working together for a few months, often coordinating to find customers in different neighborhoods. Their handler would sometimes bring clients directly to them, or they would be picked up from the hospital and taken to nearby locations.

Police Action and Ongoing Investigation

Following their arrest, both women were handed over to the police for further questioning. Authorities suspect that more individuals are involved in the racket, including handlers and possibly other women. The police have intensified their investigation to identify and apprehend all those connected to the network.

The hospital administration has also increased vigilance to prevent further misuse of the premises, ensuring that only genuine patients and their attendants are allowed entry.

Social Impact and Authorities’ Response

The incident has sent shockwaves through the local community, raising concerns about the safety and security of public institutions like hospitals. Social workers and women’s rights activists have called for greater support and rehabilitation for the women involved, many of whom may have been forced into the trade due to financial hardship or coercion.

Police officials have assured the public that strict action will be taken against all those involved in running and facilitating the sex racket. The investigation is ongoing, and more arrests are expected in the coming days.
