Indian Nurse Nimisha Priya Escapes Execution in Yemen—for Now
There has been a wave of relief and hope in India, especially in Kerala, as news broke that Indian nurse Nimisha Priya—detained in Yemen’s Sanaa prison—will not face the death penalty, at least for now. Nimisha, hailing from Palakkad in Kerala, was scheduled to be executed this Wednesday, but an unexpected reprieve from Yemeni authorities has brought a glimmer of hope to her family and supporters.

Nimisha Priya was arrested in 2017, accused of killing Yemeni citizen and agent Abdul Mehdi by allegedly administering a fatal drug overdose. In 2020, a Yemeni court found her guilty and sentenced her to death. Nimisha appealed to Yemen’s Supreme Court for clemency, but her plea was rejected in 2023. In December 2024, Yemeni President Rashad officially approved her death sentence.
Despite the bleak outlook, Nimisha’s family never gave up. The Indian government intervened diplomatically, but due to Yemen’s ongoing political instability, authorities admitted there was little more India could do. In a last-ditch effort, Nimisha’s family offered “blood money” (a form of compensation under Yemen’s Sharia law) to the victim’s family in exchange for forgiveness. Her mother sold her property and the ‘Save Nimisha Priya International Action Council’ raised crores of rupees through crowdfunding to pay the compensation.

However, Abdul Mehdi’s family declined, calling the blood money a matter of honor and refused to accept it, thus declining to forgive Nimisha. Now, however, there is renewed hope: India’s Grand Mufti and influential Sunni leader AP Abubakar Musliyar intervened, entering negotiations with Mehdi’s family and urging them to forgive Nimisha in exchange for compensation.
Whether these efforts will ultimately succeed remains uncertain, but for now, Nimisha’s execution has been postponed, and her family and well-wishers continue to hope for a permanent reprieve.
