IMD Issues Major Alert: Relief from Heavy Rains Coming Soon for North India, Monsoon Withdrawal Delayed
Article:
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a significant weather alert, bringing hope for relief from heavy rains across North India. Currently, states like Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, and the capital Delhi are facing severe flooding due to incessant rainfall. Many areas are submerged, forcing people to seek shelter in temporary relief camps.
When Will the Monsoon End?
According to the IMD, the intensity of rainfall in the Western Himalayan region will begin to decrease after September 6. Over the coming week, states such as Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, and other parts of North India can expect a respite from heavy downpours. This pause in rainfall could be a major relief for flood-stricken regions.
However, the monsoon’s withdrawal this year is slightly delayed. IMD Director General Dr. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra confirmed that in 2025, the monsoon will start retreating after September 17 and is expected to fully withdraw by the first week of October.
Rain and Flood Alerts Continue
The IMD forecasts that from September 7 to 10, regions like Western Uttar Pradesh and Delhi-NCR may still experience moderate to heavy rainfall. Meanwhile, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand remain on high alert for heavy rain and landslides. The Konkan region has also been warned of heavy rain for the next three days, while the northeastern states may see light to heavy showers in the coming week.
Why Is the Monsoon Delayed?
Meteorologists cite several reasons for the delayed monsoon withdrawal:
Climate Change: Studies show that over the last 50 years, the monsoon period has extended by about 1.6 days per decade, largely due to climate change.
El Niño Effect: The presence of El Niño in the Pacific Ocean has slowed monsoon activity, causing uneven distribution of moisture and winds over the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal.
Western Disturbances: A lack of active weather systems in North India has shifted heavier rainfall from June-July to August and September this year.
What’s Next?
As the monsoon begins to retreat, flood-hit regions may finally get some relief. However, experts warn that the effects of climate change and global weather patterns like El Niño continue to influence India’s rainfall, making future monsoons unpredictable.
