This year’s Raksha Bandhan cast a shadow of grief over Sonam’s family. The emotional turmoil began with the passing of Sonam’s grandmother, who succumbed to her illness after the family was shaken by recent events. The core of this heartbreak lies in the accusations against Sonam, who stands accused of conspiring with others to murder her husband Raja during their honeymoon in Shillong shortly after their wedding on May 11.

For Sonam’s brother, Govind, the approaching festival was especially painful. Rakhi, which was supposed to be a special occasion as it was Sonam’s first after her marriage, turned into a time of sorrow rather than celebration. Govind and his family were eagerly waiting for Sonam’s return to her parental home for the festival, but the tragedy shattered the family’s happiness.

Govind, once proud to be the recipient of his sister’s affectionate Rakhi, refused to travel to Shillong for the traditional tying of the Rakhi this year. In an emotional interview, tears filled his eyes as he recalled that their birthdays and Raksha Bandhan always fell close together, making August a month of back-to-back celebrations in their household. Now, with Sonam implicated in her husband’s murder and her arrest, Govind can only grieve for the lost bond and the festival that will never be the same again.

The sorrow didn’t end there. Sonam’s grandmother, who had been unwell and in shock ever since her granddaughter’s arrest, passed away at 4:00 AM just a day before Raksha Bandhan. The heartbreak and tension in the family proved too much for her elderly body to handle.

Govind has further stated that he will only meet Sonam again after the chargesheet in the case is filed. The double blow of losing the opportunity to celebrate Rakhi with his sister and the death of their grandmother has left the family enveloped in mourning rather than festivities.

For this family in Indore, instead of the usual joy and liveliness that daughters bring to their parental homes during Raksha Bandhan, this year’s festival has been marked by an unforgettable tragedy and sorrow.
