The Indian cinema and television fraternity is mourning the loss of veteran actor Pankaj Dheer, who passed away on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, at the age of 68. Dheer was a figure of immense recognition, primarily celebrated for his unforgettable portrayal of Karn (Karna), the benevolent warrior, in B.R. Chopra’s legendary television series, Mahabharat (1988–1990).

The actor had reportedly been battling cancer for a significant period.

The Cine and TV Artistes’ Association (CINTAA) officially confirmed the news in a deeply sorrowful statement. CINTAA wrote: “It is with deep sorrow and grief that we inform you that Shri Pankaj Dheer ji, former Chairman of our Trust and former Honorary General Secretary of CINTAA, passed away on October 15, 2025.”

His final rites were scheduled to be held on Wednesday evening at 4:30 PM near Pawan Hans, Vile Parle West, Mumbai.

A Career Defined by Dignity and Iconic Roles

 

Pankaj Dheer’s career spanned several decades, encompassing roles across both film and television. While his performance as Daana Veer Karn earned him nationwide acclaim and an enduring identity, he also left his mark in numerous other popular shows, including Chandrakanta, Yug, The Great Maratha, and Badho Bahu.

On the big screen, Dheer appeared in a variety of films, lending his powerful screen presence to projects such as Aashik Awara, Sadak, Soldier, and Baadshah.

Dheer’s connection to the industry ran deep through his family. His father, C.L. Dheer, was a renowned director and producer who worked extensively in the 1960s and 70s. Following in the family footsteps is his son, Nikitin Dheer, who is also a recognized actor, known for his roles in films like Chennai Express and Shershaah. Nikitin is married to actress Kratika Sengar.

In a poignant coincidence, just hours before Pankaj Dheer’s demise, his son Nikitin had shared a philosophical note on Instagram, referencing his deep faith. He had written: “Let what comes, come. Let what stays, stay. Let what goes, go. I am a devotee of Shiva, therefore say Shivoham and move forward. Lord Shiva will handle everything.”

 

The Role That Almost Wasn’t: From Arjun to Karn

 

Pankaj Dheer’s path to the iconic role of Karn was one marked by a fascinating twist of fate and a matter of personal principle.

Initially, Dheer was offered the role of Arjun (Arjuna) in the Mahabharat series. He even auditioned and was prepared to take on the character. However, Dheer refused a key condition set by the makers: he was required to shave his mustache and appear in a feminine guise for certain scenes. Dheer refused on principle, and the role of Arjun ultimately went to Firoz Khan (who later changed his name to Arjun).

A few months later, the makers contacted Dheer again, this time offering the role of Karn. Dheer’s immediate question reflected his earlier stand: “Will I have to shave my mustache?” B.R. Chopra reassured him that he would not, and Dheer agreed to take on the character that would define his career.

 

The Price of Authenticity

 

During an interview with Lehren Retro, Pankaj Dheer shared a dangerous incident from the Mahabharat sets, revealing the commitment of the production team to realism.

Dheer recalled that during one of the intense war sequences, an arrow accidentally struck his eye, leading to subsequent eye surgery. He explained that B.R. Chopra insisted on using real, heavy weapons and props to make the battle scenes look authentic, which unfortunately resulted in injuries to several actors on set.

Pankaj Dheer began his journey in the film industry in 1970 as an assistant director for the film Parwana. He later transitioned to small acting roles before achieving monumental fame through Mahabharat in 1988, which successfully launched his career as a prominent character actor in films and television.

His legacy remains that of an actor who commanded respect both on and off-screen, embodying the dignity and tragic heroism of Karn for a generation of viewers.
