Countdown Begins for India’s Fugitive Economic Offenders: British Team Inspects Tihar Jail for Vijay Mallya, Nirav Modi Extradition
Article:
The days of India’s high-profile economic fugitives living abroad may be numbered, as the government’s efforts to bring them back gain momentum. In a major development, a team from the UK’s Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) recently visited Delhi’s Tihar Jail to inspect conditions and assess whether fugitives like Vijay Mallya and Nirav Modi can be safely housed in India.
Why the Inspection?
Many fugitives who fled India after defaulting on massive bank loans have argued in foreign courts that Indian jails are unsafe and pose a threat to their lives. These claims have often led to delays or denials in extradition requests. To address these concerns, the CPS team toured Tihar Jail’s high-security ward, spoke with inmates, and reviewed the facilities.
Indian authorities assured the British delegation that special arrangements would be made for high-profile prisoners if required, including dedicated enclaves and enhanced security. The government emphasized that no illegal interrogation would occur, and all detainees would be treated according to international standards.
The Stakes
India currently has 178 extradition requests pending in various countries, with around 20 stuck in the UK alone. These include notorious names such as arms dealers and members of the Khalistani network. The most prominent cases are Vijay Mallya, accused of defaulting on over ₹9,000 crore in bank loans, and Nirav Modi, the main accused in the Punjab National Bank scam.
British courts have previously raised objections about Indian prison conditions, citing safety and human rights concerns. This inspection aims to remove such hurdles and pave the way for the return of these fugitives.
What’s Next?
If the CPS team is satisfied with the arrangements, the path will be cleared for the extradition of several big-name offenders. India has promised to spend whatever is necessary to ensure their safety and compliance with international law. The government is confident that, once these concerns are addressed, many fugitives will soon be brought back to serve their sentences in Indian jails.
