In the sun-baked fields of Uttar Pradesh, where the rhythms of rural life are interrupted only by the monsoon or the occasional festival, a recent incident has highlighted both the peril and the heroism that can exist side-by-side in India’s villages. A local snake rescuer, Manish Saroj, recently survived a venomous cobra bite and, undeterred, went on to conduct his third rescue operation in a week—this time saving a clutch of cobra eggs hidden deep within a family’s home.
The dramatic rescue, captured on video and quickly going viral on YouTube, reveals not only the dangers of rural life in India but also the vital role played by local wildlife experts in keeping communities safe.
A Hidden Threat
The story began in Sampul Kala, a small village in the Jaunpur district, about 12 kilometers from the city center. Villagers had noticed a large snake—described as “as big as a chicken”—lurking near their grain storage area. In rural India, such sightings are not uncommon: cobras and other snakes are often drawn to homes by the abundance of rats and the shelter provided by stacks of hay or stored grain.
But this was no ordinary snake. According to villagers, the cobra had laid a large number of eggs in a hidden corner of the house, prompting fears for the safety of both children and adults. The situation became urgent when the snake was spotted near areas frequented by women gathering fuel or preparing food—activities that, as the video explains, put them at particular risk of snakebite.
A Deadly Reality
India has the highest number of snakebite deaths in the world, with the World Health Organization estimating over 50,000 fatalities annually. The majority of these are caused by the “Big Four” venomous snakes, including the Indian cobra. In the video, Saroj warns viewers that cobra bites kill about 20,000 people every year in India alone.
“Women are especially vulnerable,” Saroj explains, “because they often reach into haystacks or grain stores without knowing what’s inside.” His advice: always use a torch and never put your hands into dark spaces blindly.
The Rescue Operation
The video, which opens with a flurry of activity and nervous laughter, shows Saroj and his team carefully removing wooden planks and sifting through hay to locate the cobra and its eggs. There is palpable tension as the rescuers work, with one team member urging everyone to stay calm and keep quiet.
When the cobra is finally spotted—a sleek, black female coiled protectively around her eggs—Saroj instructs his team to avoid sudden movements. “Don’t do anything, just look,” he says, emphasizing the need for calm and respect when dealing with such a dangerous animal.
Using a small shovel, the team gently lifts the eggs and places them in a box lined with soft earth, ensuring they remain safe and oxygenated. The mother cobra is then carefully coaxed into a container for relocation. Throughout the process, Saroj narrates the steps and explains the biology of the cobra, noting that females typically lay eggs in May or June, with hatchlings emerging two months later.
A Personal Risk
What makes this story even more remarkable is that Saroj himself had been bitten by a cobra just days earlier. “This is my fourth rescue since the bite,” he tells the camera, visibly grateful for the support and prayers of his community. His resilience and commitment to his work have earned him widespread respect, both locally and online.
The video ends with Saroj thanking the villagers for their cooperation and urging everyone to keep their homes and surroundings clean to prevent future encounters with snakes. “If you find one cobra, there may be more nearby,” he warns.
A Broader Lesson
While the video is gripping in its own right, it also serves as a reminder of the broader challenges faced by rural communities in India. Snakebites are a daily hazard for millions, and access to medical care remains limited in many areas. Local rescuers like Saroj play a crucial role in both education and prevention, often risking their own lives to protect others.
Wildlife experts say that increased awareness and better sanitation can go a long way in reducing the risk of snakebites. Simple precautions—like using a flashlight at night and keeping storage areas clean—can save lives.
A Community Hero
For the people of Sampul Kala and the thousands who have watched the video online, Manish Saroj has become something of a folk hero. His calm demeanor under pressure, deep knowledge of snakes, and willingness to risk his own safety have inspired many.
As India continues to grapple with the challenges of rural healthcare and wildlife management, stories like Saroj’s highlight the importance of local heroes—ordinary people who, through courage and compassion, make their communities safer for everyone.
