At 3:00 a.m., residents were startled awake by frantic knocking and desperate cries for help. The source was A. Chennayya, a local water tanker driver, who was banging on neighbors’ doors in a panic. When neighbors rushed outside, they found Chennayya in a state of shock, pleading for help for his wife, Rachita, who was writhing in pain and on the verge of unconsciousness inside their home.
Neighbors quickly bundled Rachita into a car and raced her to the hospital, suspecting food poisoning after hearing that she had become violently ill following dinner. But as the community mobilized to save Rachita, a far more horrifying discovery was made inside the family’s home.
Chennayya, who stayed behind to look after his three children, told neighbors that the children, too, had become unresponsive after dinner. When neighbors checked the bedroom, they found all three children—Sai Krishna, age 12; Madhupriya, age 10; and little Gautham, age 8—lying motionless in their beds. Despite desperate attempts to revive them, it was clear that none had survived the night.
Police and paramedics arrived swiftly, transporting the children to Gandhi Hospital, where doctors confirmed the worst: all three were dead.
For Chennayya, the heartbreak was overwhelming. In a single night, he had lost his entire family. Police immediately opened an investigation, initially suspecting food poisoning, as Rachita had reportedly purchased yogurt for a South Indian dish called “Perugu Annam” (curd rice) that evening.
But as the hours ticked by, the story took a dark and unexpected turn.
Chennayya told police he had left for work at 10 p.m., transporting a water tanker to Hyderabad. He claimed he had packed dinner to eat at work and did not share the ill-fated meal at home. When he returned at 3:00 a.m., he found Rachita in agony and the children unresponsive.
Police, however, found inconsistencies in his timeline. The route should have taken only a few hours, not five. And why had only Rachita and the children fallen ill?
Toxicology tests on Rachita and food samples came back negative for any poison. More disturbing still, autopsies revealed that the children had not died from poisoning at all—they had been strangled.
What had appeared to be a tragic case of food poisoning was now a triple homicide.
With the case now a murder investigation, police dug deeper into the family’s background. Phone records revealed that Rachita had been in frequent contact with a man named Shiva Kumar, a private company employee from Nalgonda district. Their conversations and messages over the previous six months pointed to a romantic affair.
When confronted with the evidence, Rachita broke down and confessed to an unthinkable crime. Driven by her desire to leave her husband and start a new life with Shiva—who insisted he would only accept her if she abandoned both her husband and children—Rachita meticulously plotted the deaths of her own children.
On the night of March 27, after feeding her children dinner, Rachita waited until her husband left for work. Then, one by one, she strangled each of her children with a towel. Afterward, she feigned illness, hoping to convince everyone that food poisoning was to blame for the deaths.
Rachita’s confession sent shockwaves through the police department and the community. Shiva Kumar, who had been informed of the plan by Rachita earlier that evening, was also arrested for his role in the conspiracy.
The case has gripped the nation, prompting widespread outrage and soul-searching. How could a mother commit such an act? Why not simply leave her marriage, rather than take the lives of her own children?
When asked by police why she didn’t pursue divorce, Rachita replied that divorce in India is a long, complex process, and she lacked the patience to wait. She admitted she saw her children as obstacles to her new life with Shiva.
The tragedy has left the Sangareddy community devastated. Neighbors remember the children as bright, cheerful, and full of life. Many are struggling to comprehend how a mother could betray her own flesh and blood so completely.
Chennayya, now left alone, faces an unimaginable loss. No legal sentence for Rachita and Shiva can restore what he has lost—a family, a future, and the trust that once bound their home.
This case has sparked intense debate across India about mental health, marriage, and the social pressures that can drive people to desperate acts. It is a sobering reminder that sometimes, the greatest dangers can come from within our own homes.
